Esplanade Picture Gardens The Esplanade and William Street, Perth, WA
In 1908, King’s Picture Gardens in William Street became the first theatre in Perth designed and built for the presentation of moving pictures with a capacity of 2,000. On Wednesday 27th December 1911 there was a change of ownership and it became Spencer’s Esplanade Gardens, featuring films and boxing events.
The Gardens continued to run as Spencer’s Esplanade Gardens until 1923. At the time it was last open-air Picture Gardens in the city proper. Boxing events continued to be held in the gardens until April 23, 1926. Then it was announced that within a few months building will be commenced on a large city central garage. The site was later redeveloped to become the Capitol Theatre and the Temple Court buildings, also housing the Embassy Ballroom at 2-10 William Street.
