The beautiful proscenium of the Capitol Theatre Tamworth – Another Picture Palace lost forever !
The Capitol Theatre was built in 1927 by Greek immigrant Zachariah “Jack” Kouvelis, who arrived in Australia in 1910 at the age of 14. The theatre flourished for a period and he sold to Hoyts in 1946. Hoyts operated the theatre right up until the late 1960’s. Television was well established and the burden of running a single screen theatre had become uneconomical. A new owner purchased the theatre, presenting live shows and concerts.
Tamworth residents were dismayed in 1984, when without notice the theatre was demolished – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
