I went to this theatre almost every weekend toward the end of its life. Always enjoyed it. Big auditoriums.

I remember going there in 1988 to see Moonstruck. There was a constant humming noise throughout the movie. The manager said certain auditoriums had screens that were kept in place by a machine that pushed out air and that was what the sound was. Never heard of this ever before or since.

I seem to remember in the 70s they also ran offbeat art films. I’m certain I saw Polanski’s REPULSION there one Friday night, circa ‘71.

Douglas commented about Bob White Theatre on Jul 22, 2010 at 8:51 pm

A unique aspect of the theatre was that the men’s rest room was right off the projection room, so movie-crazy kids like me could see the projection equipment and the reels turning.

Douglas commented about Cinema 21 on Jul 22, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I worked at this theatre briefly while going to college. They were showing Polanski’s Macbeth at the time. I must have seen portions of it a hundred times. When the late show would start and no one was there we’d signal the projectionist and he’d turn it off so we could all go home. One night I couldn’t remember if I’d turned off the hot butter machine. Not driving at the time, I walked back at 3am just to make sure. Of course, I’d already turned it off.

A great theatre in its day. “Psycho” opened there first run in August, 1960.

Steven Wells is right. It was gay 76 – 79. The early 80s it was a revival house. Mid to late 80s it was a second run double feature house…and a great place to go!

It has been a long time since the error and confusion here has been identified. This is not the later Music Box Theatre, as corroborated by many above. Is there a way that another entry can be made for the later Music Box?

A classic neighborhood theatre. It was remodeled in 1953. The entrance used to be around the block on the east side of the building. When they reopened with the new facade there was quite a celebration. That the entrance was moved around the block is the reason the lobby is so long.

A wonderful theatre. First run films, they showed a lot of classic sci-fi and horror when it opened. It was open all night! It closed in 1958. The last film was, ironically, “I Want to Live.”

Douglas commented about Blue Mouse Theatre on Jun 15, 2010 at 5:30 pm

A great place. Three movies shown continuously for about sixty cents, I believe. The theatre also had a huge cat that likely patrolled the place for rodents, an irony, given the theatre’s name. Fortunately, I never saw one.

Douglas commented about Ames Theatre on Jun 15, 2010 at 5:24 pm

My mom and I went to see Ben-Hur at the Ames in 1960. The theatre was packed and they put us in the “crying room,” a sealed-off area by the balcony for parents with screaming kids. The sound was piped in on a little speaker. What an idea! Wish they’d put people who check their Blackberries during movies in a place like that now!

Douglas commented about Avalon Theatre on Jun 15, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Memories of this theatre are overwhelming. In the late 50s and early 60s they usually showed three sci-fi-horror films along with a 3 Stooges short and cartoon. Popcorn was cheap. Is there a more convincing portrait of heaven? On the downside, the place was a madhouse, operated for kids and staffed by teenagers. In one case, the projectionist got complaints about low sound levels so he purposely cranked it up full in spite. Teenagers would dance to rock music in the aisle during intermission. It was a glorious, crazy place. In the 70s it became more respectable, usually showing first runs, then it split up into several auditoriums, eventually becoming the combo game board theatre that it is now.
