I’m still confused. What is the (former) movie theater that sits in the same parking lot as Fry’s Electronics? As in, the same side of the street, same parking lot? I think it’s the one pictured above, but the sign with the name of the place has been torn down.
I think the above movie theater is opening in that little shopping center across from the Pike Nursery, next to TJ’s Sports Bar and Grill. I think I drove by the other day and saw some signage for it.
I wish they would remodel the exterior of the building. I just drove by the Tara today and walked around and it looks like a relic now, and not in a good way. It seems in the 8 years since I last visited the area, the city has done a good job of revitalizing/renovating the surrounding area by building some new apartment high-rises, etc. Now if only they could remodel the Tara so it doesn’t look like some 1960’s spaceship nightmare.
I seem to remember this theater changing hands a few times and closing down randomly for months at a time. Maybe it didn’t. Does anyone remember?
I know I saw other movies there, but my earliest memory of attending this theater was to see “Contact” (1996) with Jodie Foster. I think I also saw “Antz” (1998) there.
I haven’t been there in years, but it’s actually a decent theater. Do they still have the “island” concession stand? If so, I always thought that was weird.
This place is located on the end of a big strip mall that sits across from North Point Mall. I remember the strip used to have a MediaPlay store in it that was hugely popular (that is, until a BestBuy opened down the street sometime around 2001 or 2002 and presumably stole MediaPlay’s customer base). A lot of people used to walk in between the MediaPlay and the theater while waiting for rides from friends and parents. I think the MediaPlay eventually closed sometime in 2003. I wonder if it affected this theater’s business at all.
Dick’s Sporting Goods now occupies the former MediaPlay space.
That’s what I thought. I wonder how long that space sat vacant between 2000 (when it closed) and 2003/2004 when it reopened as a Kroger. I also wonder if they just razed it to the ground and started over or just remodeled the existing interior/exterior to make it into a grocery store.
I would agree. Unfortunately, it is the nicest theater within 20 minutes of here, so I go there a lot. And the projection is usually good to great, unlike at the other theaters around where I live.
I am confused. Another website says that an AMC Tower Place 6 used to be located on North Point Parkway in Alpharetta, GA where the AMC Mansell Crossing 14 now stands. Is this an error on their part or was that actually ALSO an AMC Tower Place 6?
The above website also says a theater called the Tower Place 6 used to sit on the exact same address and land that this theater now sits on. The Tower Place theater was apparently demolished in the early 90’s to make way for the AMC theater.
I moved to the area in July 1992, but I don’t remember the Tower Place theater. Was it already torn down by then? That website lists it as closing in 1990, but who knows how accurate that date is. Does anyone remember the Tower Place 6? Did anyone ever go there or work there?
Over at movie-theatre.org, they say this place opened June 24, 1994. I haven’t found any newspaper articles to confirm it yet, but that may be correct. My earliest memory of going to this theater includes seeing a “Pulp Fiction” poster out front (Pulp Fiction was released in October, 1994).
I just went to Fry’s Electronics and noticed an empty building at the end of the parking lot as I pulled in. Clearly it was an old, closed down movie theater, so I came here to learn about it.
This place still stands, but man, it is a DUMP now. After having been vacant for nearly 10 years now, you think they would have bulldozed it already. You can still see the numbered signs of the 6 theaters. Looks like years ago someone smashed all the poster frames all up. Can you imagine how much this place smells by now? How much mold has grown inside there? Disgusting.
This place is TINY and so is the parking lot. Was this place always this tiny? Where did people park? How big were the theaters inside?
Again, I can’t imagine this place lasting much longer. I think I hear the wrecking ball now…
Clifford and Mike, are you guys talking about the drive-in that used to sit where the neon purple Regal Hollywood 24 sits now off of exit 93 on I-85? I remember hearing that it used to be a drive-in. Man, it must have been some drive-in! That property is huge! I would love to see any old pictures/video/film of the place.
It was also during this time that Eddie (I think) told me that one of the senior managers at the place stole like $50,000 from the theater and skipped town (he went to Vegas maybe?). I feel like one of my other friends who worked there corroborated the story.
Did anyone work there during this time? Is this story true?
I remember during my high school years (the late 90’s/early 2000’s), a few of my friends worked here. Around 2002 or 2003, my friend Eddie was working there over the weekend and told me that he was cleaning out the men’s bathrooms and found a dead guy in one of the stalls. Apparently, he had a heart attack while taking a dump. I never really got the full story, but someone had to clean that up and it wasn’t Eddie.
That was one of the most horrifying and hilarious stories I heard while in high school.

I actually got to meet James Bond once during a class trip. He was a great guy…what a wealth of knowledge on theaters and film and projection.

This is a nice indie theater (the only one in Athens right now, I think). I think it was actually built inside of an old tire factory or car repair shop from the early 20th century. I saw a couple movies there during college as class assignments. I feel like I should have gone more often.
They have GREAT projection in there, by the way. I think the theaters inside were actually designed by James Bond, a locally famous projectionist.
One odd feature of this place is that they have a bar with beer and wine and such. The last time I went to this theater was in 2007, so maybe it’s changed since then, but back then if you wanted any concessions, you had to buy them from the bartender…kinda funky.
So back then, was Georgia Square Cinemas like THE place to see movies? Because I think that’s pretty much what Beechwood and Carmike are now. The Georgia Square Mall theater is like a dollar theater now that plays movies that came out 2-6 months ago, right?
This is actually a really nice theater. I went there tons of times while I was going to school at UGA.
Sometime during early 2005, the facade of the theater and the strip mall it is located in changed because a TJ Maxx was built right next door. I remember for months it looked like the theater had closed down completely. They took the Beechwood sign down and the marquee. I honestly don’t know how they stayed afloat during those 6 or 8 months or however long the construction took. Since this place is tucked into that strip really well, and with no signage, I don’t know how people found the place.
The TJ Maxx opened by the end of that year, I think, and the huge Beechwood sign I had come to know was reduced in size in order to fit between the two buildings.
When I started going to college at UGA in the fall of 2003, I heard a few mentions here and there over the next few years about this place. Apparently, it used to be the only independent movie theater in town. It’s in the shopping center where the 24-hour Kroger is now.
Was the theater actually located in the space Kroger is using now? Does anyone know? I know Kroger only moved into that spot around 2003 or 2004, because they used to be down the street where that huge gym is now (The Omni? is that what it’s called?).
Wait, forget what I just said. I just went to the Morton website and they’re still open and running and doing events. I must have been confused when I was walking around downtown. Sorry, y'all! :–)
Also, before anyone responds, the one I am referring to is the one with the sloping blue overhang over the front entrance.

Is this not the correct address? I got the address from AMC’s website.
Wow. The Tara was NEVER closed? Not even for a week or a month when changing ownership? If that’s the case, that’s pretty impressive.
I wish they would remodel the exterior of the building. I just drove by the Tara today and walked around and it looks like a relic now, and not in a good way. They should demolish the one across the street, too! It’s an eyesore!

You mean like where the Chili’s is now? Or on the other side where the Office Depot is?
This is actually a really nice theater. I went there tons of times while I was going to school at UGA.
