Although opened by Cinemette Theatres in May of 1976, This used the Associated Theatres popular “Cinema World” building plans by architect Martin Chetlin.
It was virtually identical to the ones built in Greensburg, Pleasant Hills, Norwin Hills, Monaca, and a few others.
This is a reply to MichaelKilgore’s post: Many times published trade papers, catalogs and magazines get facts wrong.
This was just one example. I personally knew all of the parties involved.
Co-operative booking service AKA Stern-Hanna Co-operative Booking was based in the Fulton Building in Pittsburgh.
Although the cousins Ernest and George Stern operated Associated Theatres and later Cinemette Theatres, they never owned or operated The Evergreen.
The theatre was owned and operated by the Ruth family until 1961.
Homer and Rita Michael purchased the drive-in in 1961 and ran the Evergreen with their nephew Wayne Nemic until it was purchased by the current owner Joe Warren (Warren Enterprises) in 1999.
We pulled the equipment out of the theatre soon after it closed.
Apparently the theatre became a favorite of the local homeless population.
The seats were pulled out, but couldn’t be resold because of a strong urine smell.
Most of the projection equipment was sold and reinstalled in a theatre somewhere in Canada.
Glad to see that my photo of the grand opening night at the Cinema found it’s way to this page.
In 1965 Ernest and George Stern’s Associated Theatres purchased the Grand Theatre and after extensive renovations including a new balcony level projection booth, new projection equipment, new draperies that covered the auditorium walls and a new matching screen curtain, refurbished seating, and a fully remodeled lobby that included new glass entry doors below a new marquee, it was reopened as The Cinema in the summer of 1965.
The Cinema in downtown Greensburg opened and closed several times in the mid to late ‘70s
To the best of my recollection, it permanently closed sometime late in 1980 or early in 1981.
Its last movie was a porno. After the Cinema closed we started running them occasionally for a few weeks in every winter and fall at Cinema World Eastgate Plaza until Cinemette Theatres Inc. was purchased by Cinema World Inc. on December 18, 1987.
