duper, If you need to question the possibilities, then you’ll never be able to get past your sticking points.

True Class, please, I realize it’s not easy to ignore Dude’s sniping, but really, you’d be surprised at the progress rational talking has made between folks already. Most people I’ve talked to are willing to take another look at the situation…again, I’m feeling optimistic. It’s the best possible feeling to have under the circumstances.

Being able to talk rationally about the subject is one step closer to finding a solution, don’t you think?

Challenger,

Would you be willing to meet and discuss the theatre in a group scenario? Or, if you don’t like crowds, maybe we could chat over that glass of lemonade you spoke of before. Or, maybe a telephone conversation would suffice? Email me at above address, and let’s see what we can accomplish off board.

duper, I believe anything is possible.

Yes, Dude. The Friends are aware of EXACTLY who I am speaking to. Which Friends in particular are you worried about me getting “permission” from?

If that is the case, then I would appreciate any productive conversation/ideas for saving the DuPage Theatre to head to my email address:

Thanks to those who have tried to take the conversation to a higher level.

Regards,

Deb Dynako

Challenger & Concerned TaxPayer,

I just have a question regarding your opposition to tax use for public projects—-these taxes are allowable for use for projects such as the DuPage Theatre under law. They come as HISTORIC tax credits and various grants, etc. Why are you opposed to our use of such funds? I’m not trying to mix subjects, but many types of these “tax forms” are used throughout the Village in BIG and little amounts. Getting the credits/TIF/grants is no easy task and takes applications, interviews and political influence to get the money in the first place. Everyone out there is after it—-because that’s what it’s there for. I guess if I were you, I’d start lobbying the lawmakers so that this use of your tax dollars is no longer an option. But don’t say the DuPage Theatre doesn’t deserve these types of funds if you’re not willing to scrutinize other such projects in the same manner—-even those in other communities (because they’re getting YOUR tax money through these options as well as we could).

Melders and Life,

What things in particular do you know have worked for theatre restorations? Is there a few “must haves” in the recipe for success?

duper,

One thing at a time. Let’s save the theatre, then we can worry about the rest of it. I have faith that it can still happen. We have some momentum. We have some new people looking at the situation. As an optimist, I’m feeling good about our chances in court. Every day that the theatre is standing is one more good day, and I look at that as a positive. But I also know good days can run out, and I’m trying to use the time wisely to get people back to talking about the issue in a constructive manner. Because it doesn’t do anyone any good to be negative all the time. We can look at history and learn from it. I think we could get a second chance on November 17. We should look back, learn from our mistakes, and try again to prove that the theatre is worth saving. Talking with the people who didn’t care for the RSC plan as it was presented is a place to start. I think there are people who just aren’t interested in the arts or live theatre. We probably can’t convince them. Of course, there are many fervent theatre supporters. But there are many people in the middle who do see value in the theatre but are apprehensive about the path to getting it restored. Calmly discussing the issue with them may come up with a solution no one had ever considered.

Melders,

Are most preservation efforts this difficult? Are there any “success stories” that you know of where a theatre was pulled from the proverbial “brink?”

Have you heard of towns divided like ours is over this issue?

Do cooler heads prevail as is my hope?

Duden

You are the only “old-timer” using these tactics. Tell me, what has it gotten you? You’ve been continually berated by people on the different boards, and I don’t understand why you don’t try to put the time you’ve obviously got on your hands to better use. Please, if you do want this theatre so bad, let’s try a new way—-open dialog.

Dude,

We didn’t take a vote on this one, but I do have “permission” to chat with others. Again, you evidently haven’t attended any meetings lately…Hope your dues is up-to-date. I’d hate to think you were deliberately muddying up the waters if you weren’t at least a “Friend” in good standing.

I wonder why you think speaking with anyone who disagrees with your position a “recipe for disaster?” I think we’re pretty close to disaster right now. The course we’re on means the building is coming down. Why not try to find a solution that the whole community would feel good about? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with talking, is there?

As it stands, the RSC plan as presented is gone, wouldn’t you agree? We need to come up with some creative solutions. Do you want to be part of that effort or not? Do some soul searching and get back to me.

Am I wasting my time here? Isn’t there somewhere else you boys can play while I try to find answers to the questions that concern me?

DebDynako
DebDynako commented about DuPage Theater on Oct 18, 2005 at 2:52 pm

Then who does the restoration?

DebDynako
DebDynako commented about DuPage Theater on Oct 18, 2005 at 2:32 pm

Well, let’s discuss it. For $10 million, what do you get? Are you just tossing out that number as the cost of restoration per the RSC plan or does the number represent something else?

DebDynako
DebDynako commented about DuPage Theater on Oct 18, 2005 at 2:12 pm

But if someone gave the Village a $10 million check, would the village still have to own it? Or is that part of the controversy as well?

This is not the Jim Devitt website.

Let’s get back to the issue of the DuPage Theatre. Challenger, you threw out an intriguing number—–$10 million. What does that number mean?

Also, why $10 million?

DebDynako

We’ve all been bashed throughout the course of this mess…do you really think it’s just about the money?

DebDynako

Does anyone here believe that the trustees would reconsider their position of demolition?

If so, what would be some ways we could bring them back to the table to discuss options to preserve the DuPage Theatre?

LD4,

Only a few people post on this site with their real name. What difference does it really make if we “expose” Dupage Dude, et al., if no one else—-especially from your side—-is willing to post under their real name? Even if DuPage Dude is who you say he is, he still has a right to his opinion. But I still don’t think it helps matters to be calling anyone “bodily fluids from Satan.” Really, let’s get away from that nonsense.

Do you want the theatre saved? If you do, join in a constructive discussion. If not, JW, then maybe you should “sign-off for good.

Best,

Deb

You’re right, Dude. I didn’t know Mark or Doug. But I know Pete Kramer quite well and am working alongside him to save the theatre.

You know, maybe you’ve been out of touch with our group. Were you at our last meeting? We discussed the issues we face and the approaches we wish to take. If you had been there, you would know these things. And you would know our “policy” and “position.”

I guess you emailing me will make no difference if you have to ask…

DebDynako
DebDynako commented about DuPage Theater on Oct 17, 2005 at 8:30 pm

Dude,

Thanks for the sending the supportive letters. No one needs our “approval” to send them, by the way.

Look, why don’t you email me at We can chat between ourselves and maybe I can convince you that there are some people who still want the theatre even though they didn’t care for the last proposal. Maybe if we chat, you can see that bringing the community together on this IS the only way to save the building.

And lastly, I wish that Joan, Doug and Mark were still with us. I really do. But unfortunately we must go on without them. I know that they would do anything within their powers to keep the building standing. At this point it’s clear, we need community-wide support to be successful.

DebDynako
DebDynako commented about DuPage Theater on Oct 17, 2005 at 6:29 pm

Dude, I don’t blame you for being skeptical. I’m sure even as we do chat with the “other side,” trust will be a hard thing to build. But it won’t hurt to try.

Right now, the building IS positioned to come down. Again, what do we have to lose in trying to save it as a COMMUNITY?

As far as the Friends “from the top on down…” knowing what I’m saying, of course! We’re not that good at playing “nasty.” It’s just not our nature. You would know that if you were really part of the organization. Did you turn in your dues this year, Dude? But I digress… There’s no need to continue a dialog with you in this manner, either. It’s wasting my time.

By the way, what secrets are left? We’ve played our “lawsuit” card and everything else we’ve done in the light of day…

Dude!

Give me a break. I do NOT want the theatre destroyed!!! My point is that Ms. Schoff evidently petitioned the board and someone LISTENED. Listening is a good thing, which is what I want to do now.

Really Dude, what do we have to lose at this point?
