26 November, 2013 9:50AM AWST - The little theatre that could By Chloe Papas

The Little Gem movie theatre in Wagin has won the fight to keep its doors open to the public. Despite the tide of home-based downloadable entertainment, the community has saved its cinema.

Raising almost $45,000 from community donations, the staff at Little Gem have purchased a brand new digital projector and will continue to show films for the foreseeable future.

The team, run completely on a volunteer basis, were told in March that their old 35mm projector would no longer cut it, and the switch to digital was mandatory.

For a little theatre in a little town, it was a death sentence - almost.

Volunteer Christine Rich says that although their target was daunting, the team never blinked: “We said right from the start that failure was not an option.”

The Great Southern community threw their support behind Little Gem, a theatre that has become a central hub for towns stretching from Wagin to Boddington.

In just over 7 months, the volunteers had raised enough money through Facebook callouts and wood raffles to call up the big guns in Perth and order their new projector.

But although Little Gem Theatre will keep its doors open, for the man behind the theatre, the victory is bittersweet.

“It will be good where quality is concerned, but for me, I prefer the ‘click click click’ of the old projectors,” says Frank Terry.

TRIBUTE - TRIBUTE - Frank Terry

Peter Narducci writes - It is indeed with sadness we farewell Frank Terry. I met Frank Terry many years ago when I was employed as an area representative for Atkins Carlyle.

Frank operated an electrical shop in Wagin and I would call in to see Frank and we would chat about the cinema industry and forthcoming movies. Frank also operated the Wagin Drive-in.

One day, Frank said..“Have you got a few minutes to spare..I want to show you my dream project” We walked around to a building that Frank told me was an old SEC office depot and said “ This is going to be turned into a movie theatre” Over the next few months, Frank would show me the stages of the development of the Little Gem Theatre.

One of my favourite memories was Frank’s idea of overcoming a fireproof problem for some curtains that he had to install in the theatre. Frank found that a phosphorous nitrogen compound and the use of dye did the job. The curtains looked fantastic.

I never did sit in the Little Gem Theatre to watch a full movie but Frank “threw” a few movie shorts on the screen to prove that his theatre was going to be something that the Wagin community would enjoy for many years to come!
He was so correct! A man of great vision and a gentleman - So long Frank. You will be missed but never forgotten!

THE REGENT THEATRE , 134 York St, Albany On 5 February 1925, H.E.Lambert opened the Regent Theatre in York St inside the former St Alban’s Buildings on the western side of York St, just south of the Frederick St intersection.

Private boxes

The plans provide for a building of entirely modern lines, designed to give a seating capacity of 1070 persons. Of these the dress circle will seat 230 and the ground floor 840. The building is to be of brick, with cavity walls and concrete foundations. The main floor will measure 65ft. by 54ft. and seating, as in the dress circle also, will be arranged on the semi-circular plan; the whole of the chairs will be of the tip pattern, and those in the circle will be upholstered in brown plush. The maximum of space has also been allowed between rows, and as the wooden floors are graded patrons will enjoy every comfort and obtain uninterrupted views of the screenings. Two private boxes will flank the ends of the dress circle. These each have a capacity of eight persons

The Entrance

Entrance to the stalls will be through doors on each side of a marble stairway leading to the dress circle. A landing 17ft. in width will be fitted half-way up the stairway to serve as a lounge for circle patrons. The walls of this theatre have a height of 24ft. 6in. The ceilings will be of fibrous plaster, paneled with jarrah moldings, modeled on the plans of the Prince of Wales Theatre in Perth.

The Interior

The interior walls will be paneled to a height of 3ft. 6in. and the floor of the vestibule tiled in black and white. Electric radiators will be impaneled in the walls, ensuring warmth in winter. A special feature has also been made of ventilation. Oscillating fans will be installed throughout, and specially constructed air pipes fitted. The operating box will be constructed of reinforced concrete and occupy a position under the circle stairway. The circle is fitted with a special exterior exit stairway, and double escape doors are also provided on the ground floor at the front and rear of the building. Designed essentially as a picture house, the theatre has nevertheless been fitted with a commodious stage, sufficiently large to allow of the presentation of modern vaudeville turns. (Albany Advertiser 3 September 1924)

Sound equipment Australtone sound equipment was installed in December 1929. Lambert operated this venue till he sold the business to the Kanzler brothers in 1935, shortly before Lambert’s death in 1936. During the war, the Regent was operating seven nights each week, with 760 seats, and after the war the Kanzlers bought the building outright.

Re-modeled

The Regent was re-modeled & then re-opened on 22 July 1965 with a Gala Charity Film Preview of 55 Days at Peking:

Closed

The Regent was closed, and demolished in September 1969 –

This appears to be a new operation set up on the location of The Cremorne Picture Gardens - The address is the same (Stirling Terrace and York Street, Albany)

The new stating link at the corner of York-street and Stirling-terrace presented a brilliant and attractive appearance on Monday night when its official opening took place in the presence of a large assemblage of skaters in plain and fancy costume and of the general public. The rink is an open-air one and has a large skating area and the new granolithic floor appeared to give every satis faction to those using it.

The whole of the grounds were well lighted with numerous acetylene gas jets by Mouchemore & Co., rendering objects as visible as by daylight. The Albany Brass Band played incidental music throughout the evening and added considerably to the night’s enjoyment.
