Regent Theatre
The Warner Brothers ‘part talkie’ sound-on-disc feature “The Jazz Singer” had more box office appeal than Fox’s sound-on-film “The Red Dance”, which had only a musical score (recorded by the 110 piece NYC Roxy Theater orchestra). Hoyts advertising used the fact that accompanying short subjects contained dialogue, to promote their offering as a ‘talkie’ program. In fact, they stretch credibility with a downright lie – claiming that patrons will actually hear Delores Del Rio, when, in fact, no one says a single word in “The Red Dance” (and there are no recorded sound effects either).
