Photo from the Dress Circle cross-over taken during a ‘demonstration’ screening of CinemaScope 55 in 1956. (Technically, presentation was the same as CinemaScope – only difference was that the use of a larger 55mm negative in production provided enhanced image quality on 35mm prints.) In this picture the original proscenium top can be seen above the curtain track pelmet. This area was concealed by a curtain a year or so later – probably when the screen size was reduced from 51’ x 20’ to 43’ x 16’8”. This was done because of focus problems and sight-line concerns for some seating. Another factor was that for economy and convenience, Fox would introduce ‘mag/op’ prints from 1957 - which had a reduced picture aspect ratio (2.35:1 instead of 2.55:1).
