Regent Theatre
Francis William (known as Francis) Thring [1882 - 1936] left, was a mercurial showman who – as managing director of Hoyts Theatres in the late 1920s - built the Sydney Regent, and other Regents around the county (including Melbourne). On the right is Francis William (known as Frank) Thring [1926 - 1994] his actor son, who appears on screen at his father’s theater in “The Vikings” (shown here in costume). Based in Britain at the time, Frank did not attend the Sydney opening 5th February 1959, having just completed filming “Ben-Hur” in Rome. Continuing this epic vein, he remained in Europe for “King of Kings” and “El Cid” made by Samuel Bronson in Spain.
