Regent Theatre
Leon Fink purchased the Regent from J. C. Williamson in 1972 for $5m. Hoyts continued to rent the theater until February 1976 (with several leasebacks to JCW. It seems likely that Mr. Fink’s wish was to immediately demolish the theater and develop the site. However, a Heritage Listing and ’Green Bans’, not to mention a lull in the property market, stood in his way. This article from SMH 20th April 1979 was a rare foray into publicity for the gentleman, who decided to give showbiz a try. In 1928 the Regent had been designed to handle only small scale live performances to support its film programs. Among other improvements, Mr. Fink constructed desperately needed extra dressing rooms in an adjoining Bathurst Street building he had purchased.
