Bob, one summer (early 80’s) a couple of guys on our stage crew begin to restore/repaint some of the cornice work. However, as the story goes, the budget was slim and the project never really advanced. The had worked on some stuff near the stage, house-left.

Their work was restricted to after 9 PM, that’s when the porno movies would end and they could turn on the house lights to work. Plus, summer was the best time for that work, since the theatre air conditioning was really unable to handle a capacity concert crowd in the heat of summer, the place was only used for pornos.

I moved to the central New Jersey area in 1997 and used to frequent the Brook Theatre prior to the flood. Attached to the theatre was a great tea room. Most memorable film I saw there was LA Confidential.

I worked for United Artists in their cable television division. We operated the cable tv system in Westwood and a large portion of Bergen and Passaic counties. When we launched the BRAVO network, I rented the auditorium that contained the pipe organ so we could have a BRAVO launch party and showed the premiere of a film who’s title escapes me. It was an independent film, circa 1989 or so about farming and foreclosures. Even though we were part of the same parent company, we indeed had to pay a fee to rent the auditorium, in addition, we made a contribution to the Pipe Organ Society.

Now that I think of it, that Shop Rite isn’t there any more either.

Bill: I used to take the #102 in both directions. As a teen, I worked at the Shop Rite on Park Avenue, and if I was too lazy to walk from Carlstadt I’d hop on the bus.

I too remember this place as Cinema 35. Three films of note that I saw there are: The Exorcist and Russ Meyer’s Super Vixens and Up!. All three are classics in their own right!

I used to take the Public Service Bus Company #102 from Carlstadt to Hackensack to see movies at Fox and the Oritani. I can’t remember what movies I saw at each place, I remember seeing Marooned, Little Big Man and the first Airport movie at either of these places. I think I also saw the Led Zeppelin film “The Song Remains the Same” as well as the movie of Pink Floyd in Pompeii.

I grew up about a mile away in Carlstadt and would walk to the Rivoli as a kid. Saw many films there including A Hard Day’s Night, Help, French Connection, Take the Money and Run, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?

My sister took ballet classes in studio above the theatre and I would have to go there and wait while she took her lessons. I was able to climb out the front window and stand inside the aforementioned pre-1966 marquee.
