The Sharpstown Mall opened in 1961. Still going strong in the 1990s but under sever competition, the rebranded Sharpstown Center took a precipitous and then calamitous fall. Following a playbook in some other urban areas, in 2009, the all but dead Sharpstown became the PlazAmericas rebranding as a Hispanic mall. And central to the rebirth of the mall was supposed to be Viva Cinema. Unfortunately, the theater’s oddball line-ups and films and cavernous lobby area wasn’t the ticket and the high profile Viva lasted just six months.
