Texas Theater

Within the C.W. Simpson Building was a lot of theater activity. Half of the first floor was an Edison Entertainment Company early movie theater called the Theatorium (third ad at top). New owners decide to lease the entire first floor and the expanded theater opens January 18, 1909 as the Majestic ad (second ad at top). The Dixie Theatre Company takes the Majestic, closing it briefly (middle left) to become the Dixie opening July 31, 1912 (top right). The Dixie plays “A” features including Birth of a Nation (bottom left).

In 1934, the Dixie closes in September (upper left) to do a major refurbishing job and to get a name change from Robb & Rowley Theatre Circuit. Ritz Theatre (#1) opens Nov. 23, 1934 and will have a brief four year run until fire destroys it. The Texas Theatre will be housed here after the new Ritz Theatre (#2) finds a new location.
