Elmwood Skyline Drive-In

Abilene’s first drive-in, the Skyline Drive-In launched April 1, 1947 with John Wayne’s “Tall in the Saddle” (at at left). It had just one community speaker for the drive-in. The original owners were two armed service veterans who operated the theatre for one season before selling it to George and Ruth N. Likins of the Windsor Hotel going with individual, Chandler’s two-way communication drive-in speakers/intercoms and in-car electric heaters for year-round operation (second ad in 1948). Ruth Linkins received an offer of $225,000 for the property and on Valentine’s Day 1965 (ads #3 & 4) as they counted down the final days showing “Yellowstone Kelly” and “Wind Across the Everglades.”
