And then there’s Irving Berlin (composed “God Bless America”) opened shows in Patchogue that then went to NYC Broadway. Anyone know which theatre that was?

Come see films now at the PlazaMAC on 20 Terry Street in Patchogue. Check out www.plazamac.org for screenings. A true rebirth of cinema art on the South Shore – the first of any such venue in partnership with the Huntington Cinema Arts Centre on the North Shore.

I just got word from Tim Mazzei’s office that they rescued the signage for us. You will soon find this souvenir in the windows of our new cinema arts screening center at Artspace on Terry in Patchogue.

We are opening a new Cinema Arthouse at the Artspace on Terry in Patchogue (The Plaza MAC, INC) starting today. We are a not-for-profit with 501 © 3 pending and we are receiving donations. Right now we need about 75 good audience chairs for our first screening, “Mozart’s Sister” on Oct. 13, 14, 15. Anyone? Please contact me ASAP.

CaptRonLI: All our efforts at PlazaMAC have been and still are to carry on the history of screening films in Patchogue where ever we can find the space, obviously not inside the Plaza Theater. We are starting a fundraising drive to come back to this site in the future to build a Cinema Arthouse screening center and a Media Arts Center that could serve all of Suffolk County. Check us out at www.plazamac.org. In the meantime we have found a space at Artspace on Terry in Patchogue and we will be screening films there in the very near future. Hope to see you there. Let’s talk. Campbell Dalglish

Thanks for taking this photo. Let us not forget that while an absentee landlord abandoned this building and let it become an eye-sore, and while it will be a victory for the community to have this blight removed, the memories, the dreams, the lives that were changed by the films screened inside 25 years ago will now go into the bigger victory, so these dream experiences can be carried on – at the new Plaza Media Arts Center on Terry Street in Patchogue (www.plazamac.org), where dream builders are at work on a community level to bring back our love and our need for not only entertaining Cinema, but with media classes offered to locals in Suffolk County that want to make their own dreams into films and truly ignite with a spark the light that follows tearing down the blight!

The Town of Brookhaven has announced that they will demolish this building at 10AM August 30th. We are currently looking for a space to carry on the dream of a cinema arts center on the south shore in partnership with Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre: The Plaza Media Arts Center. See you all there: www.plazamac.org.

We are working diligently to get our 501 (3) c status complete so that we can officially raise money in order to be heard by the Town Board. I think once we get that and get a good chunk of money raised, maybe then the Town will climb on board and help us out. We’ll be announcing our PlazaMAC “Not-for-profit” status very soon, followed by a diligent volunteer based fund drive. Stay tuned. We are a very committed volunteer group that loves cinema, teaching cinema, and all that it can bring to a community.

Yes, it seems odd, that while much effort has been made to define what qualifies as “Blight” in that promises of turning “BLIGHT INTO LIGHT,” very little defines what “Light” should be except $$$. And that is a very short sighted plan of operation. The justifying purpose behind any legal seizure of property through “Eminent Domain” should be “for Public and Civic Purpose.” So far that has been limited to the removal of “Blight.”

Again, anything you can do to spread the word on our classes and screenings will help to support our efforts.

The Town of Brookhaven now owns the old Plaza Theatre and they plan to tear it down and have a big July 4th type affair with a parade and everything – all about getting rid of the blight. So far they have nothing for the “light” part of the promise, but we’re all working on that – together. Letters to the Town will help. We guessed this would be their plan, so our plan B has been to show that we have an audience and students. We have our not-for-profit papers, and are looking for investors, grants, funders to build a PlazaMAC in this same location. Please spread the word for us. Without an audience and students we cannot prove we have “the light.” Please tell people to go to www.plazamac.org Thanks. Look forward to seeing you at the next events.

PlazaMAC screenings and classes are happening in temporary spaces while the Town decides how it will replace “The Blight with Light.”

The PlazaMAC had an event on February 23rd at the BHB announcing the founding of the George Stoney School of Documentary Filmmaking. The Mayor Paul Pontieri came to welcome George Stoney (95 yrs old) and to present to him a brass plate with his engraved photo and the school of doc. They had another fundraising event that made the news as well on March 20th. You can view all of this on the www.plazamac.org website. So it is all happening. Of course, politics plays into everything. The tearing down of the PlazaMAC has long been in the agenda of politicians running for office. Now they need to take the lead and offer matching funds and efforts to bring on “The Light.”

Yes it is strange that after all the proposals and meetings with the Town, presentations, screenings, renderings and a ton of volunteer work, that not only the Town ignores the vision of replacing Blight with Light, but the members of East Patchogue Focus don’t mention it either, as they once claimed it was their dream and vision to revitalize the area with a Media Arts Center. What’s going on? What’s wrong with this picture?? The only people continuing to carry the dream is a small stubborn group behind the Media Arts Center screening their films at the BrickHouse Brewery Loft space www.plazamac.org You should check out their programming and get behind this dream.

This is all very interesting information. We are banking a lot of our dreams on the hope that people on the South Shore are as interested in Independent film as they are on the North Shore. What do you think? Times have changed and so has the community of Patchogue with the Artspace project bringing in 45 live-i-studio spaces for artists at the cost of $20M. Please check out our website: www.plazamac.org It would be great to get your input. We’re working very hard to raise interest and funds for a not-for-profit venue as described on our website. We also made a video and have a survey for people to fill out.

Thanks Georgy Girl:

Please visit us in Patchogue on July 16th. We’ll be in front of the Capital One Bank on Main Street. Thanks for filling out the survey. If you can spread the word far and wide, we’d appreciate it. If we can get enough surveys filled we’ll have something to show foundations of support and possible donors like the Baldwins.

I am also in the film business. Check out my latest endeavor at www.redwarriorfilms.com

Lost Memory:

Where do you dig up this information? I love it! I think we need a little history of film in Patchogue. If you check out our website (www.plazamac.org)you will see a section where we are showing the historical evolution of Patchogue from a Mill town to a boat crafts town to a budding art community that has the Pathogue Theatre of Performing Arts, the new ArtSpace for Visual Arts on Terry Street where they are building 45 live in studio spaces 1-3 bedrooms for artists only, rent stabilized for 34 years. BTW fill out our on-line survey and help make the third leg of art in Pathogue a reality – the Media Arts Center of East Patchogue – right where the old Plaza Theatre is right now. Help bring back film to Patchogue.

Hi Georgy Girl:

“Alive After Five” is in all of Patchogue. We shut the streets down, all the stores pour their hearts out and their crafts and food services into the streets. You won’t believe it’s Patchogue. You’ve got five beer breweries coming in with all kinds of beer, and about twelve live bands. The place is hopping.

rvb: You’d be a welcome guest at our kiosk. We’ll interview both you and Georgy Girl on live video, and if it’s good, we’ll include you in our You Tube video. We are after all a Media Arts Center an our goal is to get the word out, and get the word in from people like yourselves who have a heart for the Plaza Theatre, now about to become the Plaza Media Arts Center.

Hi Georgy Girl and rvb:

If any of you are interested, the PlazaMAC team (Plaza Media Arts Center) will be hosting a kiosk at the “Alive After Five” this summer for four Fridays 5-10PM on July 2, 16th, 30th and August 13th. Stop by and have a look at all our plans. We’re really into it. You can visit our website to see the work we’ve done already and look at our video to see the demonstrations and pictures of what the old theatre looks like and the new rendering. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY we need people like you to fill out our on-line survey so we can bring this all back and make a dream a reality so you can come back to Patchogue and see great independent films in your old neighborhood, and take a class or two to make your own films.

Hey Georgy Girl:

I like all of your comments. Anything that feeds into the history of the old Plaza Theatre. I have been working with a group of local businesses, community groups, cinephiles, Town of Brookhaven and media arts people to build a Media Arts Center in this location. Check out our website and our youtube video at www.plazamac.org We’d love to include you and your comments to a renewal of this old theatre. Thanks to Cinema Treasures there is now a record. Keep it coming.

A lot of people have been shouting about tearing down the Plaza Theatre. The character of Patchogue has been held hostage by an absentee landlord for over two decades. It is high time to seize this theatre through Eminent Domain. But to demolish it? Would you kill the character of a village in order to save it? It is structurally sound. I say seize it, charge the owner to empty it completely and then refurbish it, make a one hundred year old dream of film in Patchogue (there’s a history of four other film houses in this village going back to 1895), and making it a reality that reaches far into the future for everyone on Long Island. Here’s the idea. (If inerested, please contact me immediately, as we are currently in discussion with developers)

WHAT WOULD GO INSIDE A PLAZA THEATRE MEDIA ART CENTER (MAC)? THAT WOULD NOT COMPETE WITH THE PATCHOGUE THEATER, BUT COMPLIMENT IT.

1) A MEDIA LEARNING CENTER with multiple facilities where all ages could come to learn the latest in media technology
1. films and video production facilities complete with the latest cutting edge software/hardware, for rent, for checking out, for in house use by the hour
2. a music recording studio
3. computer center to learn everything from web design to presentations, to the latest software, social and work netting
4. classes in handheld technologies from cell phone to video, how to use twitter, flikr, create Facebook, Linked in, Myspace
5. creating family albums and home videos
6. presentations, family albums, family videos, you name it.
7. For a model check out www.burnsfilmcenter.org Look at the education programs they offer to ALL AGES.

2) A SCREENING ROOM for screening films directly out of the Huntington Cinema Art Center. They have an 8000 subscribed member audience that shows up regularly for films you can’t find in the big multi-plex cinemas. They have expressed interest in extending screenings of their select films on a screen in our MAC in order to expand their audience to the south shore. Whatever they’re screening on the North Shore, now gets screened in our neighborhood. www.cinemaartscentre.org/
We would also screen films and videos on special evenings created by our own members in the Learning Center.

3) AN INTERNET CAFE where people of all ages could come for a warm beverage and some time on the internet , have meetings, discussions, hang out. A great place for our youths, businesses and community members to meet and greet and work.

4) A STAGE for live musicians to test out their music talents on local audiences in an open mic kind of venue. Think ALIVE AFTER FIVE atmosphere. Check out www.arlenesgrocery.net/main.html

5) OFFICE SPACES FOR FILM AND MEDIA COMPANIES

WHAT KINDS OF BUSINESSES WOULD A MAC DRAW TO ITS IMMEDIATE LOCATION?

1) COMPUTER STORES (APPLE or COMP-USA, or others)

2) BOOK STORES (BORDERS or BARNES AND NOBLE or others)

3) FILM AND VIDEO EQUIPMENT STORES, CAMERA STORES , PRODUCTION SUPPLY AND RENTAL STORES (like B & H)

4) RESTAURANTS, BARS, SPECIALTY FOOD STORES

5) VARIOUS STORES WITH MEDIA INTERESTED CLIENTS WHO ARE HANGING OUT WHILE RELATIVES TAKE CLASSES

WHAT KINDS OF PEOPLE WOULD A MAC DRAW TO THE AREA LOOKING INTO OUR BACK YARDS?

1) FAMILIES FROM OVER AN HOUR AWAY LOOKING FOR A FUN WAY TO CATCH UP ON THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY THROUGH FAMILY PROGRAMS, CLASSES AND EVENTS.

2) ALL AGES INTERESTED IN THE LATEST MEDIA TECHNOLOGY, FROM VIDEO PROGRAMMING, HOME MOVIES, WEB DESIGN, TO PROFESSIONAL COMMERCIALS AND INDUSTRIAL FILMS.

3) TRAINING CENTER FOR THOSE SEEKING CAREERS IN MEDIA PRODUCTION, COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, FILM, TELEVISION, RADIO BROADCASTING.

4) SPECIAL FILM AUDIENCES LIKE THE 8000 MEMBERS WHO GO TO THE HUNTINGTON CINEMA ART CENTER.

5) FILMMAKERS LOOKING FOR RENTAL EQUIPMENT AND/OR CREW TO MAKE A FILM OR VIDEO ON LONG ISLAND.

6) MUSICIANS SEEKING PRODUCTION OF THEIR FIRST CD.

7) MUSICIANS, NEW BANDS, LOOKING FOR AN INFORMAL CHANCE TO SHOW THEIR STUFF ON AN OPEN MIC TO A LARGE AUDIENCE (“ALIVE AFER FIVE” STYLE OR LIKE ARLENE’S GROCERY IN SOHO)
