It’s too bad they are going to throw money at this place. It’s just going to be torn up within a month by the bangers that destroyed it and DROVE away the customers before.They are better off using the money to light a cigar.
I went there today to see Zohan.I have not been there in a year or so,and was wondering when the mercy killing of this theatre will happen? Whomever is running it is driving it off a cliff,they cannot do a better job if they tried! What a sticky floored,busted seat,overflowed toilet,haphazardly painted,torn up theatre! The Granada when it was in the process of being TORN DOWN ,was in better shape than this dive.This degradation has happened quickly and recently! WAY TO GO!!!
In the area where Grand,North ,Kostner is[where cook bros. is now],is where the ONLY american Schwinn bicycle factory once stood! How can antone forget that ?,it hasn’t been that long ago.
La Grange is a highly yuppified area ,and the downtown has become too expensive to house this botched theatre.If it isn’t condos ,or expensive shops ,face it ,they always WERE going to try to get rid of this theatre ,and the owners don’t help their cause any by letting it get as run down as it has gotten!
I just was down Pulaski today to take a look at this site,and it is as described,a fenced in storage lot for building materials,and equipment,so sad an end to such a beautiful palace.The ONLY consolation is this theatre did not live to see the riots that rocked this area in 68'.
It takes a sensible person to admit defeat in the face of overwhelming odds & big money.Unfortunately this is the climate in which we live in this country ,just accept it.
Money and condos win again,don’t bother to save any piece of it,it will only be sold to the people who will live in these new condos,and they will want to have it so they can comment on it’s “quaintness”.Another piece of America dies ,accept it.
I was wondering when this theatre was going to be finally listed!As a lifelong resident of this town ,I can tell you that after it closed,it was used as a furniture store in the sixties before demolition.Just to the south of it was the Woolworth store,which after IT closed,took half of the land ,and the other half of the theatre land,as well as the diner next door[venus],is still vacant to this day…FYI…
I go ONLY to the tivoli, lagrange,ETC…I used to go to patio,montclare,portage,etc…I make it a point to stay away from new theatres[the term used loosely].Now my few choices are becoming fewer.This is the USA,MONEY WINS EVERYTIME!
Face it,money talks,and developers don’t care about anything that dosen’t fatten their pockets.This theatre met the same fate that will EVENTUALLY claim ALL Chicago and it’s suburbs theatres.I’m afraid there’s no use fighting it.Take your hat off to them,they’ve won.
I don’t live in lombard ,but am a classic theatre devotee.Go ahead yuppies,tear it down if you wish.Make your money off of the deal.But remember,when you tear down and close down places that kids ,and young people frequent,you kind of limit their ability to stay out of trouble.Mabye they can find something else to do instead.Like drugs,sex at parents houses that aren’t home,vandalism,gang banging,mabye even robbing people in the neighborhood,mabye people that have the most,like the rich or yuppies.Be careful what you wish for!,that’s how it started for us in Melrose,and our neighbors in Bellwood.
I seem to remember that the bricktown theatre was to replace the shuttered Montclare.What a shame to lose that one and the Mercury.I still have memories of seeing pee wee herman’s big adventure in the fall going back to school time in the early 1980’s.Both those theatres were awesome.
I dont know how true it is ,but someone mentioned to me today that they are thinking of tearing down the tivoli and the bowling alley next to it ,so they can put up condos like those across the street!If any one has info on this ,please post ,thanks!
I just recently discovered this site ,I was a big fan of the Montclare theatre .It was just SO beautiful ,and many memories.It was a real sad day as I watched it being torn down.I did go inside and grab some momentos and look around.It was also sad to see it linger on for 15 years or so of abandonment & get so run down and ruined.The slumlord who did this should join city officials and be locked up ,for they have no pride.
