Just don’t think about the two new [horrible] small screens – look at some of the photos above. We should all look for the main auditorium [bingo], the ballroom and the restaurant; all of these areas have false lowered ceilings with original decorative plaster and decorations above.
English Heritage should look at all these areas/points before they say it is not worth listing!
And remember, it’s the New Victoria or Gaumont NOT the Odeon – the Odeon-built Odeon was on Manchester Rd 600 mts away.

It was good to see the old girl as beautiful as ever! – I do hate the ‘PATHE’ sign they have put on the front of the canopy, originaly there was only the Tushinsli Theatre sign you can just see behind. For give me but I closed the Nogerath [plus flower shop] in 1983 – but the Cineac’s in the Regularsbristraat and the Damrak were both in use, art movies in the 1st and Porno in the latter! – the Damrak Cinemac was also a beauty in my day

I just cannot believe this great building was not listed. I was the assistant manager here for a couple of years in 1962. my first film was Dr Caligaries Coffin – 3282 seats and total ads for the week were about 600!! It was run in those days with two enourmous Coke Boilers for all heating ect., with a full time boilerman. A real Cine/Theatre with beautiful foyers, a large Cafe and a big Ballroom -do look at Colin Suttons site [see above] it just shows what we are all going to miss forever
Many now wonder if the local council were right in refusing to allow that original and beautiful sign on the FOH to be changed – I bet they did not realise that the refusal really upset the owners who said they would close it if permission was not granted, and the council called their bluff! it was not a bluff!
Being listed Grade II could help – I releived there in the 60’s when George Shepherd was the very long time Manager.

What a wonderful site created by Colin Sutton – the detailed facts are superb!
Just for the record between 1961 and 1964 David Wilmot was the GM – this was the true hayday of one night stands – in 1963 the beatles one night [two performances] sold out [6564 seats as it was then]in 2 hours 40 mins with 10 ticket selling positions – I know I was Davids Assistant Manager!
Lets just remember there was a seperate Odeon built Odeon in Bradford on Manchester Road, a typical Odeon demolished many years ago. Most people will always refer to this beauty as the ‘Gaumont’ or ‘New Vic’

I have such a soft spot for this cinema as my father was the ‘opening manager’ and I was interviewed for a job wi5th Odeon here in 1962. The projectionists walk way is unique and I would love to understand what has to bw done to get it listed!?
As MD of Tushinski Beheer BV in the ‘80’s [of the 19 cinemas in the group this cinema is the best in the Netherlands, Europe, the World??
in '84 I was able to replace the original main foyer carpet [50 yrs old] with a new carpet made by the original maker in Morroco to the original patten and specification. It was flown to Amsterdam courtesy of KLM in one peice![cost then $106k] The pile on the original was thrad bere the replacement hade a pile depth of 2 inches!
Do visit!!! and insist on seeing the Chinese room and dont miss the circle side foyers and other smanll rooms of the circle lounge. All in all the ultimate cinema treasure!
