According to this article, this, among many other buildings are to be demo'ed for a new project. Pray to Eneru that the plan doesn’t stop and it just leaves a gaping hole.
Mr. Warshauer, if you want to enquire on purchasing this building, you won’t find any place to do so here. If you want to buy the building, you need to speak to the York Council, then try to make an offer better than what Reel offered.
I thought it would be of intrest to inform you that plans have been improved for demolition of the building and building of a 3-11 storey office building.
The article is here, but it’s a subscription site. I think the bit that’s shown explains it all.
But on the link in the last comment, read the comment on the article’s page by the commenter ‘Guy Fawkes’. While I (Again) do not live in york, and therefore, don’t care about this, he does raise some intresting points about what use the building would be.
And lets face it, you know the building is doomed anyway. Reel hasn’t even started refurbising the inside anyway, so if Reel hasn’t gone as far as that, it’s as easy as saying, ‘oden york is doomed’
Yes, you are reading that right. To be more justified, English Heritage is not allowing the New Victoria scheme to go ahead, including full demolition of the New Vic/Gaumont/Odeon. Now, if only BORG would submit their plans if a review period is set up again, instead of letting some ‘heartless’ developer come up with some smart alec solution that would involve destroying this as a cinema.
I’ve been putting this off, so better to take the stake to the heart now than later.
Bradford New Vic/Gaumont/ODEON has been refused listing and is doomed, here’s a link. View link
Since I don’t live in Bradford, my opinion does not count and therefore, I resent my ‘Save this building’ comments here. They can do much better on the ODOEN/Paramount Newcastle which I’m near.
My guess is that BORG will do the dangerous and walk on the site, preventing the demoliton staff from destroying it. Then again, BORG knows not to do anything dangerous.
I didn’t inform BORG about said above article on my last comment and I will refuse to inform them about this, since I don’t live in Bradford and I’ve never been in the building properly.
You should read this. He (The author of the article) is true. The building can’t be saved. Even if it is saved, ODEON slapped a Conveant on the site, preventing its use as an entertainment venue. Besides, the English Heritage still won’t budge to list the building.
I’ve been here and to be honest, the ’re-branding' was pretty poor. All EMPIRE majorly did was replace the sign at the front and some cosmetic changes. The majority of the ODEON style text is still there. Heck EMPIRE also just stickered the EMPIRE logo over the poster cases and the refreshment area menus.
I’ve never been back in since I’ve seen ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and frankly, I regret it majorly.
How I’d give to once again sit in the magic of Screen 1 and enjoy films there.
… Then again, that seems more like a dream since there is the 12-screen multiplex nearby, which people are more likely to go to, alongside the Tyneside Cinema. That is a Cinema, not a multiplex (But I do respect the right of a multiplex)
If I had the money, I would refurbish the cinema to it’s former glory, still with the 4 sub-divided screens, refurb the ODEON ‘shop’ to a combination mini shop selling magazines, the sorts AND still selling confectionary for the cinema.
Remember, there are certian things that people can do and cannot do to Listed buildings. Since the ODEON York is one of them, they can only do so much.
Besides, didn’t a former ODEON, the Parkway Cinema take 2 years before it opened?
The council are allowing demolition of this grand picutre palace. It’s a case of them saying they can’t do it yet they can. In this case, they say that this cinema is unreparible, yet it can be listed and saved.
Well, the building is still empty and unused. I think it needs a new owner. The problem, the Save the Newcastle Paramount campaign is pretty quiet.
The building has been empty for so long it’s not funny anymore. Something needs to be put in it. Demolition is an option, but considering the grandness, Demo shouldn’t really be considered.
If they say that it’s worth it, perhaps this could be saved. Although, they could say no and say that Demo is ok. And considering the changes done, I highly doubt the future of this building. I mean, screen 1 and 2 are pretty bare.
“The protesters were calling for wheelchair access to be improved at the Commercial Road cinema.
However, Odeon said it was not possible to adapt the present building but they were looking for another site."
Key words ‘ANOTHER SITE’
This is inexcusable for ODEON. This means this single screen Art Deco faces closure for another souless multiplex. Best start up the ‘Save the Hereford ODEON’ campaigns, higliting that disability access can be easily added.
Well, at least the EMPIER cinemas @ the Limelight in Sunderland isn’t as bad as this one, as the only evidence of Cineworld is the Cineworld star on the Tickets, Pick and mix and Games sign. If only I saw an example of UCI/thefilmworks branding left.
I went to see The Hunchback Of Notre Dame here once. Pretty good presentation. But, like all things in life, I learnt to move on. The people trying to save this cinemas can continue for all I care. Personally, I don’t see this coming back to life. I mean, ODEON themselves asked for the de-listing and when it was trying to be re-listed, English Heritage didn’t want to re-list it. So, I’m throwing in my towel and letting everyone else attempt to save it. I will just continue to live in the life of multiplexes. All the art deco cinemas near me are no more (Save for the Tyneside Cinema) and I adjusted to the Multiplexes.
This cinema was great in it’s time, but now, it looks rather derlict.
The building is going to be put to rest, according to this news article.

A classic cinema with Digital 3D?
Well, good on the owners of this cinema. The people at Bournemouth don’t need to go that long to see 3D, all they need to do is go down to the ABC.
Just need a bit of clarification.
Was this the first cinema, when owned by ODEON, to get the new Fanatical About Film brand, or is that another cinema?
Just pointing this out for all the people in York
From news reports I’ve seen, the cinema, now known as Reel York is now open for buisness (SP?).
I’m just the messenger, but I bring good news to people in York, while I, ironically, am not in York.
Nice exterior and lobby shot(s). Do you have any more, or is that the lot you have?

Apparently, because of some sign issues, Reel is trying to get Pay and display set up at the rear of the building-while the inside remains untouched.
I don’t live in york and don’t have an opinion, but if the argument is won by the council, this building could be as good as gone.
Posting 3 times in a row… I just know there’s something wrong.
But I come with good news, for those who live in Bradford and want to save this building anyways.

Those pictures convey my meaning excatically.

Totally unexcuseable.
I’ll be informing BORG about this.

So, any thoughts on the closure and multiplexing of this site?
I visited this cinema in its UCI and ODEON states. For me, I just wonder if there were any pictures of this cinema?
Even if it doesn’t have any special decorations in it, excluding the lobby decoration, I’ll miss it since it was the cinema that I saw Toy Story in.
The Bradford Odeon could be saved. Check this newsbit out.

Oooh. Is there any pictures of the largest screens with balcony showing?
Search Google News and you’ll come across this little shocker.

Reel should put up its own sign. It would be strange to have the ODEON sign up.
