Rick, those are great memories you have. I think that’s why movies have such a strong hold on people—it’s not just the movies themselves you remember, but the people you were with when you saw them. I also remember the Plain-Edison. For some reason I remember it as the Plainfield Edison Drive-In, which is what my mother and friends called it as well. It was right down the street from the Iselin Theater, where I also went to see films. I remember seeing American Graffitti at the Plainfield Edison and later Hooper and the animated Lord of the Rings. Good memories.

I saw several films here, including Young Frankenstein, Hot Stuff and The Main Event. As a kid, the place seemed upscale to me compared to the Fords and Iselin Theaters I was used to going to.

I saw several films here in the late 70s—early 80s, including Stripes, Gandhi, The Shining and Love at First Bite.

As a child growing up in the 1970s I went with my family to watch movies at the Amboy Drive-In. I vaguely remember that for at least one summer they showed all Disney movies. I saw Fantasia, Bambi, Dumbo, Mary Poppins, The Shaggy DA, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Herbie the Lovebug and a few others. I also remember catching bits of movies whenever my parents drove across the bridge at night from South Amboy to Perth Amboy. It’s truly a shame kids no longer experience the magic of drive-ins.
