In the middle 1940’s I lived on 73rd Ave. just below E14th St. The only other Theater close by was the Granada. Occasionally, my parents would take me up to the Elmhurst District and we would go to the Eastmont. I also remember the Chevy Plant at what is now the Eastmont Mall. Things can certainly change in ones lifetime.

I just moved into the Maxwell Park area, attending Fremont High in the 50’s and a neighbor asked me if I wanted to go to the movies with him and the rest of the guys. That was the first time I went to the Laurel Theater. It was around 1953. We moved around Oakland a lot. From downtown to East Oakland.

If I recall correctly, didn’t they have rocking or reclining seats in some sections? I also thought it was still operating into the middle 50’s. I do remember in the 60’s it was converted into a grocery store as mentioned in another post.

I have been to the Capitol Theater many times, during the late 40’s and early 50’s. Primarily in the 50’s while attending Frick Jr. High. I lived on 63rd Ave. at that time and would go to the Saturday Matinee’s. Later, in the early 60’s I bowled in a league at the converted Hi Score Lanes. I have a few trophy’s from bowling there. I also remember the Hobby Shop across Seminary, Russcraft Hobbies.
