To add insult to injury, the new Walgreens building being built on the site isn’t anywhere near where the Harwan stood. I appears it was demolished to either allow the Walgreens to be viewed better from the BHP or simply for more parking lot space. Either way it was a loss that should not be taken sitting down. I hope that everyone will participate in boycotting them and hopefully they will start closing stores instead of tearing down landmarks to build more eyesores.
The only way to stop the loss of these vulnerable buildings is to boycott the businesses who prey on them. I suggest everyone do as I and write emails or letters to the Walgreen’s and Eckards ( They took down the Century then abandoned their building less then a year later ) and let them know that this practice will not be tolerated and they will not get business from us or our friends and family. Also residents of these cities should write or call elected officials and let them know that actions such as these will cost them votes in the next election. I have never seen anyone get angry because a building was saved, but the opposite is very true…..
IT’S GOING DOWN !!!!! The Harwan was being demolished today 1/16/2007 !!! I rode by it and there were two large construction shovels ripping down the surrounding structures. There were pieces of the roof over the lobby missing and a large hole in the wall above the marquee. I took what will probably be the last pictures of it on my camera phone. I will post them to a site shorty. Sad, very sad indeed…..
Just goes to show the pea-brained mentality of the idiots we elect to represent us as a so-called government. These poor excuses for human beings allowed the building to be torn down to build an Eckards drug store. ( Keep in mind now there was already a CVS right across the street !!! ) The Eckards lasted less then a year before they abandond the site. So now instead of having a piece of American history they have a white elephany of a building that no one wants or needs. GREAT JOB CIY OFFICALS !!!! Hope you morons are never in charge of my city….
Went by it today… it is boarded up and there is a temporary fence around the whole building. It looks like the end is near for another one of these treasures….
Just went to see Santa Clause 3 with my kids. They loved watching a movie from the balcony of the theater. They were amazed that it was “sooooo big” inside since they have only been to the local 8 screen multiplexes with their cramped theaters and small screens. I am very happy I was able to share this with my kids before all these wonders are gone forever. I still don’t understand why some of the big Hollywood organizations are contributing toward saving these theaters. One donation from a big name could support a theater like the Broadway for a very long time. Lest they forget these are the venues that made Hollywood what it is today.
NOTE anyone interested George Carlin is doing two shows here on the 23rd of February. Tickets are 45 and 42 dollars ( a bargain by todays standards. ) They are available at the website http://www.thebroadwaytheatre.org . I’ll see you there….

SHOULD READ
“I still don’t understand why some of the big Hollywood organizations are NOT contributing toward saving these theaters”
Sorry for the typo…
