Yep, I grew up in Maroubra in the 50’s and early 60’s. I often went to Saturday afternoon matinees at the Vocalist. It was 1 shilling and 3 pence to get in as I recall. Session started with 3 minute film of a very young Queen Elizabeth saluting the troops on a horse at Buckingham Palace, while God Save the Queen was played (everyone stood up), then a cartoon, usually Tom and Jerry or Heckle and Jeckle, then a newsreel or a serial, then a short feature film followed by a 15 minute intermission. During the intermission you could buy Columbine Caramels, Fantales, Minties and Samboy Chips. Then the main feature. Amongst the films I remember seeing there are “The Ten Commandments”,“Genevieve”, “Tomahawk”, “Away all Boats”, a Danny Kaye film where he’s a school teacher (can’t remember the name) and “Moby Dick”. Gregory Peck’s Ahab was scary. The tram on the right in the photo is going to Maroubra Beach. The one on the left is going out to La Perouse. Just behind the pine tree on the right there was a tram stop.
