The best rep theatre in the U.S. is the Film Forum in New York. Right now they are running a festival of film noir films set in New York City. Four or five times a year they run different and inventive festivals where double and triple features play for one or two days over a minimum of five weeks. Many of the prints are new 35mm made for the purpose of screening at the festival. Sometimes they run 16mm prints when there are no other prints available. Sometimes they use prints from collectors when the studio prints are unavailable or in bad shape. The URL for this theatre is: www.filmforum.org However, it is a not for profit corporation and the operating expenses of the theatre are subsidized by member contributions and by corporate sponsorships.

In recent years there have been restorations of classic films. It is unclear from the e-mails whether
the May screening of “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” is of the original U.S. release version or the restored version that includes footage that was recently redubbed with the voices of Eastwood, Wallach and Rich Little (subbing for Lee Van Cleef). This version was screened at the Film Forum and I believe that it is included on the recent DVD. Perhaps sometone at the theatre can clarify which version is being exhibited.

I’m still waiting for news.

It looks like a beautiful theatre.

It looks like someone spent money on renovating it and cared for it.

It looks like it is now abandoned.

Please advise.

The telephone doesn’t answer.

The website doesn’t work.

The theatre is dark.

There is nothing on the marquee.

Although there has been little or no publicity it would appear that the theatre is closed.

If that is incorrect then Mr. Elson should let us know what is happened.

We all care and are concerned.

I concluded yesterday that since there is no listed, the website is done and the phones don’t work that the Elson/Embassy management has closed the theatre.

The pictures that they were able to get or chose were simply not very appealing.

This is a good venue and someone that is creative and prepared to hang in there for a reasonable period can probably turn it around.

This is one of the last neighborhood theatres and it’s worth saving.

The closing raises the question of whether they will refund the multiple admission tickets or whether buyers will find themselves making claims in Bankruptcy Court.

This theatre should be listed as “closed”. It was undergoing renovation and a lot was accomplished. From the outside it looks like it has been repainted and that the poster frames and woodwork have been restored.

But as of September 1, 2005 there was no evidence that any work being done on the theatre. And it looked like the work had been discontinued for some time.

There was some unsubstantiated rumor to the effect that the contractor was negotiating for construction permits on other buildings and that this was tying things up.

But whatever the cause for the stop the theatre is not being finished and it looks like it has been “under renovation” for a period that is so painfully long that the project may have createred.

It’s a shame because it looks like it was a beautiful classic theatre and the neighborhood where it i s located looks like it could use a shot in the arm.

I looked at this site when I returned and found no current news about the theatre.

Any news would be welcome.
