The Grand Foyer had fine paintings, marble and bronze statues and reproduction renaissance furniture, chandeliers and five huge arched windows with rich drapery which looked out onto Rundle Street and the iconic and much loved John Martin’s department store opposite which began and staged the world’s largest Christmas Pageant from 1934 until it was taken over and closed. The pageant still occurs every year, and none of the hundreds of costumed participants is paid. It takes more than an hour to pass, and has dozens of elaborate animated floats.
