Western Wall and Proscenium.
Despite its size, the Metro was an intimate theatre, with the audience having a perfect view of the screen from their blue velvet coloured Dunlopillo chairs. Some of them still exist and grace John Thiele’s magnificent private ‘Regent, Balmoral’ theatre in suburban Adelaide. He also has some of the Metro’s contour curtain covering one wall of its foyer. Several light fittings from the Metro’s foyer walls are in the lounge room of his adjoining house, as they do not meld with the Regent style of architecture. Adelaide people generally loved the Regent, Wests and Metro theatres best of all those in the city, varying the order of their favourites according to their individual tastes. We have lost all of them!
