The Town played dirty movies in the 70’s and as a kid I was never allowed to go in :–( Paramount theatre and a “Royal Castle” restaurant was next door.
this was the worst theatre in the world. Uncomforable seats. It was also a hangout for the elderly to get out of the heat. I think it was a department store at one time…and a bank.
the last days of the operating Cinema Theatre on Washington Avenue the starting playing vintage double features….burned into my memory was seeing “Adventures of Robin Hood” with Errol Flynn and “Now, Voyager” with Betty Davis. This was in the late 70’s. Broke my heart when some morons decided to build shops instead of the theatre….what a beautiful lobby!
Yeah, I passed by that theatre one time about two weeks ago (that was actually Christmas Eve). On the way home from visiting our Grandma, we saw the huge marquee, and on the side it said “Finding Polar Treasure”, which brought on a nice little laugh. Anyway, I’ve never been inside this theatre, but I’ve seen it a good number of times, complete with the old “Cineplex Odeon” logo intact.
this theatre was located on Miami Avenue and between Second and Third Street. They showed low budget double features in the early 70’s and my Mom would not let us go inside to watch a movie. Downtown hobo’s and all the crime was what happened to the Rio. It got so bad that they left the lights on while the movie was played. Gesu Church was across the street and down a half a block…the church, built by Flagler, is still in operation. Chaplinfan
I saw many a movie at the Miami Theatre in the early 70’s, the most memorable was a double feature Bullitt with Steve McQueen and Bonnie and Clyde. The Olympia Theatre across the street was a real palace. I seem to remember Flagler having about 5 movie houses. The Olympia, The Miami, The Paramount, The Florida and The Towne (which was showing nudie flicks by the early 70’s) There was another theatre on Miami Avenue near the Gesu Church called the “Rio” which we were barred from going there by Mom cause all the bums and crime went there. I saw many a double feature at the Cameo in the 70’s. For 35 cents you got some great second run movies. It was also a place where the elderly Jewish neighbors would come in and sleep to get out of the heat. We’d buy candy next door at the McCrory’s and sneak it in the theatre to save money. chaplinfan

I saw “Escape from the Planet of the Apes” in this theatre…the line wrapped around the block to 2nd Avenue and it was packed.
