Ken Roe commented about Regun Theater on Jun 5, 2007 at 6:48 am

The 1914-1915 edition of American Motion Picture Directory has a Grant Theatre, 11 W. 116th Street. The 1926 edition of Film Daily Yearbook has the 800 seat Jewel Theatre listed at #11. By 1930 the seating capacity is listed as 751 and by 1941 seating is listed as 700. Then back up to 751 seats between 1943 and 1950. The Jewel Theatre has gone from listings by 1957.

Nothing is listed for 9 W. 116th Street so the ‘Grand’ you found must be the ‘Grant’ of 1914-1915 vintage (although that could be a mis-print).

Incidently, checking the 1914-1915 A.M.P.D. more closely I notice that the Imperial Theatre is also listed as the Regan Theatre(their spelling) at this same address, so that must have been the period of name change.

The Imperial Theater is listed as operating in the 1914-1915 edition of American Motion Picture Directory. By the time the 1926 edition of Film Daily Yearbook was published it had been re-named Regun Theater, with a seating capacity given as 1,000.

Still listed as open in 1950 (with 867 seats), it has gone from listings in 1957.

Ken Roe commented about Tatler Cinema Club on Jun 4, 2007 at 7:54 am

Lost Memory; That link is to a photograph of a former cinema in Glasgow, Scotland (last known as the Tatler Cinema Club).

There were many Tatler Cinema Clubs operating in the UK in the 1970’s and 1980’s. They were operated by Classic Cinemas and were usually re-branded former Classic Cinema’s which were not doing good business. In the right location, a sex cinema could make a lot of money. There are currently no other Tatler Cinema Clubs listed on Cinema Treasures under this name, but there are some cinemas that ‘turned around’ after being Tatler Cinema Clubs eg:

the Rio Cinema, Dalston, London, the Classic Cinema, Colindale, London, the Odeon Park Royal, London and the Classic Cinema, Stockwell, London are all listed with aka’s.

Ken Roe commented about Garden Theater on Jun 4, 2007 at 6:47 am

Warren; Regarding your above post on May 29, 2007, I have the Cedar/Richmond Hill Theatre listed earlier than 1921. In the American Motion Picture Directory 1914-1915 it is the Maple Theatre.

Lost Memory; Regarding your above post on June 25, 2005 in which the newspaper article states ‘the Garden Theatre was built in 1919’. In the American Motion Picture directory 1914-1915 there is a Garden Theatre listed on Jamaica Avenue (no number given). I wonder if there were two Garden Theatres or if that 1919 date is incorrect.

Warren; There is no Majestic Theatre listed in 1914-1915 so maybe it remained open after the Garden or the other Garden (if there was more than one) had opened?(well until at least 1921).

For the record here are the Richmond Hill theatres listed in 1914-1915:

Amus. Palace Theatre, 2818 Jamaica Avenue
Crescent Theatre, 2125 Jamaica Avenue
Dreamland Theatre, Oxford & Jamaica Avenues
Garden Theatre, Jamaica Avenue
Library Square Theatre, 304 Lefferts Avenue
Maple Theatre, 2923 Jamaica Avenue

The Orpheum Theatre opened in the early 1920’s as the Casino Theatre. It was re-named Orpheum in 1930 and closed in 1966.

The Boomtown Theatre community Players purchased the current building in 1992 according to their website. I don’t believe this building was ever in use as a cinema/movie theatre. It is not listed in any Film Daily Yearbook that I have (1941, 1943 or 1950).

If you look at the photos posted by Cosmic Ray very closely, you will see the name of the previous occupiers of the building, both on the entrance floor and the facade. I am sure it was in use previously as a retail store of some kind operated by (what looks like) ‘Kraker Bros & Naifeh’.

If this is the case, then I am afraid this building does not qualify to be listed on Cinema Treasures, as it has never screened a movie.

Yes, the Rialto Theatre is listed in editions of F.D.Y. between 1941 and 1950 at least with a seating capacity of 1,125. Operated by Fox Intermountain Theatres in the 1940’s. Address anyone? Please. Then we can add it to C.T.

Ken Roe commented about Montauk Movie on May 30, 2007 at 5:06 am

Can anyone shed a light on the approximate age/decade of this theatre please? I have a listing in the Film Daily Yearbook;1941 edition, of a Montauk Theatre, located in the township of Montauk Point, Long Island which has a a seating capacity of 350. It is listed as ‘Closed’ in that edition and doesn’t appear in either the 1943 or 1950 editions of F.D.Y.

The architectural firm Boller Brothers of St. Louis submitted plans to the owner/builder David A. Bisagno, but he preferred and accepted the designs submitted by architect Larry P. Larson of Webb City, Missouri.
