When the Variety Theatre was still running porn the restrooms were on either side of the screen. I’m sure they changed this when it went legit.

I think with the movies it always started the show. At least that’s how I remember it. Rob

I still don’t know why Disney does not try this policy in New York.

You are so right, and every year the show got sparser and sparser. I remember by the late 70’s people standing in front of the drapes singing with no backdrops or props for some numbers. The thing is I long for those days just beacuse seeing the movie and stage show was special. I have a question, was there any other theatre anywhere in the world that was still running a stage show and movie until almost 1980?

Does anyone know anything about this theatre once it stopped showing newsreels?

I have a feeling this theatre was built many years before they actually opened it. Its a large auditorium with a big screen. The interior will remind you of Centurys.

If the theatre had a newer look you must have been in the Essex Cinema which was not that far away.

Moss loved that name, he used it on many of his theatres.

My above posting should have read “all the renovations Cineplex did on the inside”. It seems the whole building is abandoned not just the cinemas. Could be another high rise coop.

Too bad this had to die for the sake of an air conditioner.

Did the original Centurys company before the merger ever think of trying a Manhattan location?

Another NY fixture like the Bleecker and 8th Street that should have been saved.

I’m confused because the above paragraph mentions the Golden Theatre chain. I always thought they owned and managed theatres like the Oceana and Benson. On one of the theatre pages someone said they were only a booking company and did not manage the theatres. Can anyone shed some light?

LA is getting a second Cinematheque and NY has none. What a great thing to do with the Gramercy.

It’s funny now when you look back but there was that time when X films played in regular theatres. Many of these were the higher budgeted features and many of them were soft core. There were hard core features shown also. RKO booked alot of these films in their theares at the time.

I remember all that neon for the Grand Pussycat, the background was blue with the name of the theatre in bright red.
