It is with deep sadness that the Art Film Foundation announces it has stopped showing films and that it will cease operations at the Art Theater on October 31, 2019.
We know that you, our members and audience, are amazing. We have made so many memories together: we’ve laughed, screamed, and cried tears of joy and sadness. We’ve shared in groundbreaking films and unique experiences, from Casablanca to Rocky Horror. When we hit rough patches in the past, you stepped up and helped us with emergency fundraising. Emergency funds help with discrete, one-time needs, and the Art Theater has remained in operation because of your passionate support and the tireless work of our wonderful staff. Unfortunately, the film industry is changing and we will face systemic challenges that show no signs of abating.
We thank you for your donations, your volunteer hours, your memberships, and your attendance. While the Art Film Foundation and the Art Theater have come to an end, we truly believe that this incredible community of cinema-lovers in the local area will carry on.
Bruce Springsteen Returns to NJ Hometown for Surprise ‘Western Stars’ Introduction
Bruce Springsteen returned to his hometown of Freehold, New Jersey to offer a surprise introduction to the first public multiplex viewing of his concert/documentary film, “Western Stars.”
Dressed simply in a brown jacket, Springsteen took a moment to say a few words at the AMC Freehold 14 movie theater on Saturday night.
“We knew we weren’t going to tour, so I tried to figure out a way to get the music to you,” the 70-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer told the audience.
After making a few brief remarks about filming the movie at his barn in Colts Neck, and in Joshua Tree National Park, Springsteen asked a small favor.
“If you have applause, I would save it for the end of the film,” he said. “Because the editing and the pacing of the film has its own message.”
“Thanks for coming out,” he continued. “Thanks for supporting me all these years, and enjoy ‘Western Stars.‘”
Demand for the movie at home was so great it screened in two theaters, 4 and 9, with Springsteen popping into both, said attendee Pete Maimone, who posted video of one of the appearances.
This was the second time in a month Springsteen returned to Freehold. In September, he came in for the opening of the exhibit “Springsteen: His Hometown,” performing one song with Joe Grushecky at the grand opening. The exhibit is currently on display at the Monmouth County Historical Association on Court Street in Freehold.
“Western Stars,” which Springsteen co-directed with longtime collaborator Thom Zimny, opens nationwide Oct. 25, after two nights of public sneak previews in select theaters, held Saturday night and again this coming Wednesday.
I have seen Ava Gardner’s vocals synced back with the footage, and it’s lovely, but I can see why Arthur Freed may have wanted a stronger voice in the film; Julie does have a couple of important numbers to sing. I guess it was some consolation to Gardner that they did use her vocal tracks on the soundtrack album.
In Once Upon… when Sharon and friends are going into El Coyote, Sharon notices that there is a premiere going on at the nearby dirty movies… was it this house she noticed?
I just watched a Beverly Hillbillies episode dated 1/15/63, and while the family was driving around showing visiting cousin Pearl the local sights, they stopped for a moment in front of the Capri Riviera Theaters, which was presenting a “Silent Movie Festival” and featured wax figures of Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino and William S. Hart out in front of the theater; an unseen barker announced that the figures were there courtesy of the Beverly Hills Movie Museum.

The Royale (now Bernard B. Jacobs) played the movie Gigi for six months and earned a spot on this website.

Joe, I’m sure you’re a nice guy but you do seem to love a lot of movies many others consider mediocre at best…
