This is the place I saw “A Man and A Woman”.It is a nice neighborhood type house.I’m so glad it survived,so sad the downtown places did not.I thought of it as the Saskatoon version of the Grandin.I was in Saskatoon for the summer months of ‘67.The green trees were quite lush and the little city gave off a great ambience.
Roanoke,Patsy,is probably the most livable,pleasent place in the country,with more beauty than is given to most places.The biggest stain is the total wipe out of the former array of great downtown theaters.Several are not listed on the site,including the largest and grandest.One attraction for a traveler like me,is the traditionally lower than anywhere in the region,gas prices.
Today the TIMES DISPATCH outlined the new plans for the NATIONAL.Historic Richmond Foundation has signed to sell the house to Richmond Capital Ventures.Their operating arm has a good track record in other venues with musical acts and other performances.The puts the kabosh on the Arts Foundation’s hopes for the National.Most of their hopes were toilet city anyway.The group plans to work in concert with the NORVA in Norfolk,with regards to booking various groups.This all sounds good,so far.
Can you please provide the needed info and routing to contribute to this great work.Also your federal # for my accountant,and anyone else’s bean counter.
Thanks to a great guy named Twig,the man behind the “old Roanoke"website,I have received great exterior shots of the American and a fine interior shot.These pictures rekindled my distaste of that fine banking institution.One shot shows the place all decked out for Christmas.He has also sent me shots of the interior and exterior of the Jefferson down the street,taken before it was remodeled,long before it met it’s untimely demise.He also furnished a good exterior shot of the Academy of Music and an interior shot of the double balconied Roanoke Theater,once Roanoke’s largest house.From the pictures,it is obvious the the American was a much more massive edifice than the familiar Byrd.
There are few,if any cities that have been so devastated as Dallas.The utter detruction of so many theaters was a tragedy.Having one left is better the zilch,I guess.Some still are not listed here.
I attended several movies there in the winter of 66-67.The balconey was a little odd,and since reading here that it was a tack-on,that’s not surprising.My main impression was OLD,now I know why.It was the only operating theater for many miles around.Lethbridge had a really fine,large theater at the time.There was a bldg in town that appeared to have once been a theater for the once wild and wooly Ft.Macleod audience.
Big article in the AM Deseret News on the return of the consultant’s report with regards the fate of the UTAH.The idea that the house should be rehabbed into a 2,500 seat Broadway style venue was poopooed by the bean counters.They came back with a 800-1500 seat proposal.With the now-probable crime in making with the destruction of the Raymond,the importance of the few remaining great theaters becomes more critical.
Fri eve.,enjoyed the new Harry Potter.Sat in the balcony.Seats pretty comfy.If the Byrd seats were that good,I could die happy.Great eats,treats and beverages avail.The owner had a chat before the film.Audience voted on which film he should book next.That was cool.The help were just excellent.Very motivated and acted as if they were glad you were there.The place needs new HVAC and owner explained his problems.Place deserves supportNot a movie palace,but definitely a great time warp experience.It is a fine asset for OldeTowne.
St.A does have a rather odd little multiplex to the West of the Lightner.Serves some food and brew.Otherwise it’s a tiny multiplex at their tiny mall S.on US 1.On balmy St.A eves,I’d rather take a romantic stroll and dine and dance to the live musica at Havana Village.The Monterey is the best lodging location for the $.Right on the bay.Great family runs it.This town is my favorite place for a romantic weekend.Christmas lights and doings are great.Ck.St.Augustine.com.for all the info.
THE PLOT THICKENS!!!Today’s Times-Dispatch has a lovely picture of the great house with the headline and story indicating that the city may “seize” the place and reopen it pronto w/o extensive “renovations”.Quotes from the usual suspects.
This is truly a family operation and is a refreshing change from the corporate mega-plex world.Not a movie “palace”,but definitely an old time experience.The fact that it is so family friendly and inexpensive is great for those big Mormon families.The Deseret News had a great article a few months ago on this operation.I believe the article can be located on the utahtheaters.info site
In a couple books I have on St.Augustine,there are several good pictures of this theater.The loss of this palace was and still is a tragedy for the old city.I often think what an addition to this magic place,this place would be now.
I can only pray that some group with smarts,vision and buckets of money can find Paterson before it becomes Port Arthur,Tex.Paterson could be the BEST place for many miles in all directions.I’m glad I work for a co.that appreciates the low overhead that Paterson offers.More capitalists could make the same discovery.It is an ideal location for the distribution of our disposable products(wipers,gloves,etc.)with the location,location,location.Has anybody ever thought of grabbing Trump and taking him on a tour of Paterson?
