Any word on whether the opening has been delayed? The Regency site still says 10/28, but there are no showtimes anywhere and 10/28 is a mere day away.

I’m not so sure I’d call it “snagged,” Brad. The Chinese will be using Grauman’s + two more theaters for AFI Fest that week. They just couldn’t swing DUE DATE with SAW 3D already taking up two screens.

The Crest is now on the Carmike website and actively ticketing on Fandango.

Just saw “Life as We Know it” at 7:10 tonight and was one of four in the audience. Still the best balcony on the planet.

They installed Sony 4K, really? Terrific news. I thought Carmike only used Christie.

Regency is re-opening the theater soon as a discount house, according to their website. Wow.

To be fair, INCEPTION is rare in that it’s a three-hour long movie. If the movie is only 100 minutes and you get in and out quickly, you’ll be able to park for free before 6.

But yeah, it’s a problem. The AMPCO garage the Crest had (still has?) a validation deal with used to be open late and on weekends (for only $3 all day Sat/Sun), but it has had limited hours for two years now.

Still, Westwood parking gets a bad wrap given you can still park for only $3 on Bronxton after 5, and I’m pretty sure Regency has continued the policy of giving you a $1 discount if you show your parking ticket.

So LET ME IN bombed, grossing less than $2 million opening Friday. Not even the ArcLight sold out its 200-seat house for the prime show last night. Doesn’t speak well for the kind of business it’s doing at the Crest; hopefully Carmike is mindful of this.

But beyond that, the fact is, most of us only have time for one or two movies a week. When that’s the situation, you’re far more inclined to pick by the movie, not the venue. All the better if The Crest has something I want to see, but other than trying to avoid megaplexes, I’m not going to adhere to any hard-and-fast venue rules.

I think the attendance has more to do with a bad booking than anything else. I guarantee ALPHA AND OMEGA didn’t have more than 10 people at a weekday evening show anywhere in Greater Los Angeles. Couple that with the fact that Westwood is hardly a kid’s town. I’d expect LET ME IN to do much better.

The Facebook page now indicates the Crest will be getting LET ME IN, SAW 3D, TANGLED 3D, and TRON 3D. Carmike does indeed have far more booking leverage.

Very good considering the movie has been out for six weekends and is a move-over for the Regent…

The 3D was installed the morning of 9/24, it seems.

The Crest’s Facebook states they’re now equipped with DLP and REAL D, and are now showing ALPHA AND OMEGA that way. It will play for one more week, meaning they should indeed either get LET ME IN or CASE 49 on Friday.

Two week contract, Brad. ALPHA AND OMEGA continues into its second week.

However, next week, provided AVCO only gets THE SOCIAL NETWORK (they can only make room for one unless they drop EASY A after only two weekends, which is unlikely), then the Crest will have its pick of LET ME IN or CASE 49 next week.

Goldstein writes they’re playing “Alpha and Omega” right now, but it’s not on any websites, including Carmike’s.

Wow. The article is here: View link

With 3D to bring in many of those releases alongside the Bruin, who else thinks the AVCO may be the next casualty in Westwood?

Anybody got any speculation on when we’ll see the takeover? The Crest website and phone line are officially out of service, no hint on who’s next. WALL STREET 2 would be a Crest kinda movie; maybe that’s what they’ll re-open with?

Danny Baldwin

The most logical idea would be AMC taking it, with Avco as the move-over, but the chances of them acquiring a single screen with a poor history of profitability is about as likely as Los Angeles freezing over today.

What I’m piecing together is that the Fine Arts guy bought the theater, and someone else is leasing it from him? It is on his website, after all. Maybe it’s a special agreement where he will use it for screenings at off hours and they will use it during business hours? We’ll know on Friday, right?

If that’s true, I wonder if they’d ever consider saving the Festival.

So who do people think? Regency? Laemmle?

Danny Baldwin commented about TCL Chinese Theatre on Aug 23, 2010 at 6:50 pm

All it takes for the Chinese to get a new movie every week or every few weeks is some horrible August crap that ArcLight won’t touch.

Danny Baldwin

I think there’s still a chance for a double-booking with WB ala TERMINATOR SALVATION. When they installed 3D at the Chinese, they must have been thinking about a big movie that would help bring a return on that investment. HARRY POTTER would be that movie. But maybe I’m overly optimistic.

NANNY MCPHEE 2 doesn’t show up on MovietTickets.com — weird.
