Good point, CWalczak. You made me change my mind.

The ceiling was obviously lowered for the supermarket.

I remember when the Uptown was a neighborhood house in the 50’s. Cinerama was shown at the Warner in downtown.

The photo is the streeet entrance which leads to the entrance/checkout section which looks ilke a lobby and leads you to the store. The supermarket is huge for NYC standards. It was definitely an auditorium, no columns, etc., though the ceiling is low for a theater.

I have been at this supermarket and it was definitely a movie theater. You can just know from the shape of the outside of the building. Which theater? I don’t know.

I can understand CapnRob comment, he has a point. But Bob Jensen, an exclamation point is showmanship? Come'on! It’s their writing style. Showmanship is about presenting shows, spectacles, not about writing.

Why the line “And now…Part 48: Cinerama Presentations in Orlando, Florida!” and all lines announcing Cinerama in a particular city end with an exclamation point as if announcing the second coming? Just end it with a colon. And now…Part 48: Cinerama Presentations in Orlando, Florida:

Gracias Davsot, pero como hemos comentado aquí cremos que es el Royal. No recuerdo haber visto el Luna, solo he oido hablar de el. Creo debemos comentar en inglés para beneficio de todos los miembros de CT. Saludos.

Lo siento, el Luna seria el cuarto cine de SJ ya que se han mencionado tres. Alguien tiene informacion sobre si habia un Cine Luna?

AGRoura commented about Cine Royal on Mar 28, 2010 at 4:23 pm

When I was a kid, while on vacation in NYC, I saw There’s No Business Like Show Business at the Roxy. Only time I visited the Roxy. What a shame is gone.

DiMaggio: One of our company’s VP was a former VP of Cinerama Inc. and he was the one who told our technical director which anamorphic lens to use so we could fill the entire cinerama screen with a scope film. I don’t know the specs of the lens, but if I remember correctly it was longer than the anamorphic lenses we used in our other theaters. For 35 standard wide we used similar lenses as in the other theaters.

At the Cinerama theater in San Juan, PR, regular wide screen 35mm films were shown in the center of the cinerama screen masked by the curtain. Scope and 70mm were shown on the full screen. 70mm looked better of course, sharper, but scope looked OK. First scope film we showed was Fantastic Voyage. Cinerama Inc. never told us to mask the screen for non-Cinerama pics. The theater did not have any masking anyway, just the curtain.

I just clicked on the map above and don’t think is San Justo. It may be Cruz St., don’t know. The map is confusing. Plaza de Armas is not on the Paseo de la Princesa and Plaza de la Catedral is on Cristo St., not were it appears on the map.

AGRoura commented about Cine Royal on Mar 7, 2010 at 8:17 am

Oops!!!! The intro above says Calle San Justo. Why are we wondering were it is? And why do we need the street number? The theater is there, on San Justo, just before Fortaleza.

There were no theaters in Fortaleza or Cristo streets. This photo is on the street that goes up on the right side of Plaza de Armas, where City Hall is, just before Fortaleza St. Would you believe I can’t remember the name of the street and I went up and down that street many times in January?

They haven’t finished the renovation? About two years ago I passed by Humacao and saw that beautiful theater in front of the town’s plaza. Had no idea Humacao had such a beautiful theater. Why is it taking so long to renovate?

Yes, Bob, but i wanted people on this page who don’t go into the Metropolitan page to know.

AGRoura commented about Teatro Rialto on Mar 5, 2010 at 11:45 pm

The Rialto is now and has been for many years a Burger King at San Francisco Street next to La Barandilla steps and the park, which have been in the process of being reconstructed for about 2 years. When Rafael Ramos Cobián owned the San Juan Senadores baseball team, players from the continental USA stayed at an apartment on top of the Rialto. The Burger King is now serving mallorcas for breakfast, and the Burger King in Ponce serves sweet plantains as part of its menu. At least it was serving them a few years ago.

Bob: I did the ads for SOM in PR and did not do any ad asking who Charmian Carr was. By the time she made her appearance at the theater the film had already played for many many weeks and everyone knew who she was. That night the theater was packed and everyone wanted to touch Charmian and get her autograph.

JSA: I felt emotional and nostalgic by reading your comments on the article. Brought back many memories. Yes, all dressed up, no T shirts or ragged jeans. Those were the days!

Correction on my comment above: Should have said return engagement instead of reissue. We brought the film back at the Metropolitan after the film or films that followed it ended its run. Charmian Carr made an appearance on the first night of the return engagement.
