for the opening weekend April 26-28 how can I tell if a showing is in the Dolby Cinema? I figure End Game is the perfect film to experience the Dolby Cinema for the first time.

It’s just a way for websites to get clicks. One person sells a ticket on eBay for a higher sum and it becomes a story on 20 outlets. That’s just how movie news works.

what’s all this i hear/read about people paying astronomical sums to scalpers for opening tickets to End Game? i just looked at Fandango and none of the shows for opening weekend i looked at were sold out.
IMAX said people prefer 2D shows in the United States. Over 80% of U.S. moviegoers watch movies in 2D instead of 3D. They’ll still do 3D for James Cameron films or others where the studio would like that, but for most they plan to prioritize 2D.

It took me all day of pulling my hair out with my phone and computer to get tickets to Avengers in Imax on Thursday April 25th. Does anyone know why most showings of Avengers are in 2D but for some reason they show it in Imax 3D for the 2:30p showings only? Why is it more and more big blockbusters are shown in Imax 2D only and no Imax 3D?
Mike (saps) the problem is AMC only has one technician for the NY/NJ area. I met him last year while running 70MM here last year. To say he is overwhelmed would be an understatement. He spends half his time just dealing with stupid little petty issues.
Re: Dolby ATMOS coming to Kips Bay? I did plan to see DUMBO here at Lincoln last week, but their senior morning price for the standard version in 2D was $17.29. Saw it at Kips Bay in Theater 8 last week, senior morning for $8.49 with an extra perk!! Noticed the sound was particularly good. Looked up and saw the 10 ceiling speakers, and my seat rumbled several times. Seems they’re making Theater 8 into Dolby. IMAX is 2 theaters down. Enjoyed the movie. Yep.. they do go to DREAMLAND Coney Island??!!
It’s the bulb in the projector, speak to the manager or contact headquarters. It’s a chronic problem that drives me up the wall.

this is a question for people who saw Dumbo at this theater this past weekend. I don’t like this new trend in dark films meaning the visuals not the dramatic tone. I saw the film at the 19th East and found the film as dark as Solo: A Stars Story and Captain Marvel. I don’t get it. they spend millions on a film and can’t afford proper lighting? even the scenes in Dumbo which took place during the day were unusually dark.
AMC has a few in NJ with BOTH Dolby and IMAX.
In Northern NJ ALONE, you can to the AMC Paramus, Clifton, Rockaway, and Elizabeth theaters all within 20 miles of each other, and have dolby and imax.
For IMAX, go to Paramus, they have the largest. For Dolby, go to Elizabeth, they turn off those hallway lights unlike other dolby’s and are the newest one out.

thank you to my fellow posters for their replies to the darkness issue I started. a question- is it remotely possible that some directors consciously shot scenes that are under lit to be artsy?
Many locations have both Dolby and IMAX. (34th St for instance as well.)
They’re seperate companies who made seperate deals with AMC. It might be bothering them but they can’t do much about it.
A general question regarding AMC, how common is it for one site to have both Dolby Cinema and IMAX auditoriums? I believe AMC Lincoln 13 and AMC Empire 25 have both?
In the UK there is currently just one Dolby Cinema (Odeon Luxe, Leicester Square London) with another opening soon in Leeds. Neither of which include an IMAX screen in the same multiplex. Which is what raised this question. Wondered if it bothered either Dolby or IMAX having the other competing if you will in the same location?
Image brightness is a common problem at many AMC theaters, at many theaters in general I suppose. Whenever I pointed out to an usher or a manager, they never seem to know what I’m talking about, although in the same complex you can go from one screen that is bright and clear in the next screen over is murky and dark.
Sooner or later I am going to write them an email, or try to contact the district manager, because they are not giving these movies away for free and if I’m paying for the AMC amazing experience, I expect to get it.

thanks to stevenj for your thoughts on the darkness issue. I saw Boy Erased at this theater last Nov. and was disappointed that a few scenes were rather under lit. so last month when the Blu-ray came out I bought and guess what? the scenes I had the dimly lit issue with were the same way on the Blu-ray.
bigjoe59….I posted the link because as Mr Louis says in the article it is the most common problem he encounters in other (than Alamo I assume) theaters. The only sure way to find out if CM was projected dimly at the Orpheum would be to see it at another theater and compare. Or ask the manager at the Orpheum if films projected there meet the industry standard of 14 foot-lamberts. I’ve only been to an Alamo theatre once and it was to see one of the Star Wars films a couple of years ago in 3D. It was the best projected digital/3D film I’d ever seen. At the neighborhood theatre I go to regularly here in SF, digital film brightness is inconsistent and sometimes disappointing.

thanks for your replies about the darkness issue. so is stevenj saying that CM wasn’t filmed that dark its just how the Orpheum was screening it? I ask the question again since the Orpheum manager said in the case of “Solo” that that was the way the film was shot and not a result of their screening of it.

Mark Louis, Director of Presentation for the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain, was interviewed on the linked website about screen brightness, masking, 3D etc. noting that “all digital movies are supposed to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, an industry standard established by a group called DCI. And my DVD blu ray of “SOLO” seemed to be filmed through Clam Chowder.
And there is no projectionist so even if it could be fixed it wouldn’t be.

in terms of ridethectrain’s comment. as I said my screening of CM at the Orpheum was way to dark in spots to the point in a few scenes you couldn’t see exactly what was happening. so is ridethectrain’s comment to infer that the projectionist at the Orpheum was incorrectly screening the film? I had the same problem at the screening I attended last Spring of Solo-A Star Wars Story. I questioned the manager and he said it was the film not the way they were showing it.
I meant that you should ALSO post a comment on the Orpheum page, because it would be reporting a condition at the theater where it actually occurred. Other users of that page may wish join the conversation and describe their own experiences…
