Cinemark, thanks for the compiment. I remember seeing “Flashdance” and “Cocoon” there and saw “Temple of Doom” at the late Tuesday night premiere in which they showed it on both #1 and #4.

JRS40, thanks to your knowledge about how the ads for River oaks were set up, I’ve been able to find out through some of the microfilm I have that the following movies played at RO 1 at one point or another. Here it goes:

4/23/82- DEATH WISH II (why?)
6/4/82- STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (Of note, Poltergeist was in 5&6)
6/11/82- E.T
9/3/82- AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN (Of note, it may have opened here earlier)
12/8/82- FIRST BLOOD (may have opened here earlier)
4/15/83- FLASHDANCE
5/25/83- RETURN OF THE JEDI
5/11/84- FIRESTARTER
5/23/84- INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM
4/26/85- STICK
5/22/85- RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II
6/7/85- THE GOONIES(?)
6/21/85- COCOON

More will follow.

Never mind, I think I answered my question. I’ll explain a little later. I’m having so much fun with my research.

CinemarkFan

Okay, but the movies aren’t set up like the old Plitt directories, it’s just top-to bottom. BTW, I looked at the Plitt directory from this day 25 years ago, and I know Blade Runner was in 2. The ad was like this

ET 70MM Star Trek II 70MM
Blade Runner.

I’m gonna go through more old stuff. This is fun.

JRS40 on June 25, 2007 at 4:35 pm

Yeah CinemarkFan. If it is as I wrote above then “Stakeout” would have been in #1 with “Lost Boys” next door in #4.

CinemarkFan
CinemarkFan on June 25, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Thanks JRS40. I never knew that. Now the River Oaks ad/movie directory from 8/5/87 is set up/arranged just like this

Stakeout [R] 70MM dolby
The Lost Boys [R] 70MM dolby
Full Metal Jacket [R]
The Living Daylights [PG]
La Bamba [PG-13]
Robocop [R]
Adventures in Babysitting [PG-13]
Dragnet [PG-13}

So does this mean that Stakeout was in 1, with Lost Boys being in 4? I’m gonna go through the Plitt directories from the early 80s to practice this. Again, thanks.

I know #2 was equipped for 70MM and would assume #3 was as well but that’s just a guess. Can’t remember which auditorium “Stakeout” was in but I remember the ads. If it’s the top two then #1 is on the left and #4 is on the right. Just below is #2 on the left and #3 on the right. Just below is #5 on the left and #6 on the right. Just below is #7 on the right and #8 on the left. I hope this helps CinemarkFan.

Wow, So does this mean River Oaks 2-3 was equipped for 70MM?

Another question for anyone who can remember. Which River Oaks screen played Stakeout in 70MM? I have a microfilm ad from 8/5/87, which is Stakeout’s opening day, and it’s showing in 70MM. Also, The Lost Boys was showing at RO in 70MM too.

“Alien” played on the number two screen across the street from the big theater.

I also remember in 1986, the River Oaks played the sequel “Aliens” in 70mm Dolby at the same time as “Top Gun” in 70mm Dolby on another screen.

Yes, “Alien” (1979) played at RIVER OAKS. Here’s a link to an article I wrote a few years ago about the the original release and which theatres it played.

Now that I really look at that list, did Alien ever play on the big screen when it came out?

The movie Magic played for an entire month before Superman? Hmm. I was working there at the time and I don’t recall it doing so well.

Speaking of which, the opening credits for Superman were great. Nice and long. We had a lot of packed houses and we had to train the ushers to ask everyone to move to the center of their row so we could seat people on the ends.

I was thinking of this when I saw the recent Superman movie in the theater. The old one may have been a little crude and rough around the edges at times, but it had lots more magic than the recent one. IMHO

Actually there are a few Wednesday openings along the way (Close Encounters is another) but I always wrote them down on a Friday. Thanks for the compliments.

Great list, JRS40! One minor correction regarding “The Empire Strikes Back”: it opened on Wednesday, May 21, 1980 rather than the Friday the 23rd.

List of the original May 21, 1980 bookings of ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’

jimpiscitelli
jimpiscitelli on May 10, 2007 at 6:44 pm

As looking at the dates from opening in 1969 through 1981, the movies ran from two weeks to several months (depending on how popular the movie was) especially the time gap of “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back”. Too bad today’s megaplexes would not keep a movie for several months.

When I was a kid I used to keep track of the films that played at all the theaters in Northwest Indiana and River Oaks, which was just over the state line. I also did the same for the palaces downtown. I wish I knew of an easy way to get hold of the list you want Cinemark but the only thing I could guess would be going to the library and looking it up week by week, year by year.

Also, do you know of a way you can get a list of films that played at River Oaks from 1982-1992?

How did you get ahold of that list? Thanks for sharing that information JRS, now I know where my Dad saw “Thief”.

Yeah, the owners of Lansing Cinema 8 reopened River Oaks 1-6. I’ve seen two movies there since.

Hasn’t one of the River Oaks now re-opened? I believe it was done by the same company that has the Lansing.

River Oaks 9-10 is getting the wrecking ball, not the 1-6 building. I was at the time capsule opening…..what a disappointment that was. A dreary ending to one of the finest movie houses in the region.

redrocket77
redrocket77 on April 26, 2006 at 4:10 pm

River Oaks 1-6 actually had a 70 MM projector. Inside Theater #1, I remember when I used to work there…the only 70 MM film that every played was Gettysburg. It was 4 hours long…….yikes! The only movie that I ever worked that ever had an intermission.
