The Cinerama Dome is on Sunset and Vine and it is still there. I have been in it many times. I went to the 25th anniversary of IMMMW many years ago. That photo is not the Dome in Hollywood. The Dome never looked like that.

Hello-

I was last out in L.A. the Spring of 2003 so I can’t honestly vouch for the accuracy of the photo at the top of this page. but if it isn’t the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Blvd. and Vine was is it there?

I doubt that it is another Arclight it looks like a Cinerama theater. It’s too big to be another Arclight. It might be in Europe or Australia.

Roger A….Perhaps one of the 14 other ArcLight auditoriums?

I have wondered about the photo at the top of the page. It is not the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.

Yes there is Digital version of HTWWW but the resolution is no where near that of the film presentation. I don’t mind the lines as the resolution of the show print right off the negative is far better than digital.

I am curious about the photo at the top of this thread. It isn’t the Cinerama screen in the Dome, nor does the seating arrangement seem to be from that venue.

I went out to LA in Oct. 2012 specifically to see HTWWW during a Cinerama revival at the Cinerama Dome. Since the film has been restored for DVD and those lines virtually eliminated, is it possible that the film can be projected on the full screen in digital form?

A little research with Google turned up the fact that Warner did consider restoring Brothers Grimm, which they had done with HTWWW. They concluded that the demand for Brothers Grimm would not be as great as for HTWWW, and that the cost could not be justified.

The collectors who have prints be them 3 panel or CinemaScope don’t own them; prints were not sold ever. They just ended up in collectors hands instead of the band-saw or escaped being used for slug in the editing rooms. They don’t own the rights of course. Using the material that exists, be it three panel or CinemaScope, a blu-ray could be made but I doubt it would be worth what it cost to make a good blu-ray. It’s just not going to sell that many copies.

Bigjoe – a major studio like WB is unlikely to use a damaged collector’s print.

I really don’t know the details, but can a blu-ray be created from a print of a movie? I thought you needed a good copy of the movie’s negative, which bigjoe59 said had been damaged in the case of Brothers Grimm.

Don’t confuse ownership of a print with rights to the movie.

Hello-

as a reply to my question about TWWOTBG another question. if a 3-panel print in reasonably good condition exits why hasn’t a Blu-ray disc been issued? the guy who owns it would make a mint.

This Australian print played at the Dome in 2012. It was really something to see. It did break down once, in the first 10 minutes, but played perfectly after that. I would love to eventually see a Blu-ray in Smilebox. Probably the most underrated Cinerama production. The showmanship, imagination and kindness of George Pal are on constant display.

I wish they would run it again at the dome in 3 stgrip

Brothers Grimm was shown last October at Bradford’s Widescreen Weekend in 3 strip Cinerama. They used the only known surviving 3 panel print, which I believe belongs to a fellow in Australia.

We are talking about some of the most boring movies ever made the only reason to go see them is in the original format! Maybe try three 8K digital projectors if you want digital. The first time I saw a film in Cinerama was a 70mm version of This is Cinerama. I was not impressed. Within the last few years I went to a showing of HtWWW in Cinerama three projector at the Dome. I sat in the Cinerama ZONE that is why I went. The resolution was fantastic. When it cut to the footage shot in Ultra-Panavision I could see grain and the resolution was just not as good. Yea, these movies look great in hi def AT HOME. All of the wide format FILM looks great on hi def AT HOME. Why would I go to the theater to see what I can watch AT HOME and skip through or pause. I got stuck watching some digital print of Russian Adventure or Summer Holiday I forget the title. It was such a bad experience I never went back to any other Cinerama screenings. I saw Dunkirk in 70mm in the Dome it looked good. I don’t think it was off a digital intermediate. They should run Hateful Eight for a week in 70mm. Some people just don’t get it Digital can not beat the look of fine grain negative film and a print made right off the original negative.

If they ran that three projector print of HTWWW for a week two shows a day and advertised it properly lots of people would go see it. I was tempted to go see some of these films at the Cinerama Theater in Seattle.

There were 35mm CinemaScope IB tec prints of Bothers Grimm and those looked good; there still may be one in someones collection.

Roger – I wish they would show 3 strip again at the Dome, but I think that they are more likely to show the new second digital restorations of TIC and Windjammer that are being released on Bluray by Flicker Alley on May 8. Seems like the only place left to see authentic Cinerama these days is in Bradford, England, and their 3 strip showings are much less frequent than they used to be.

When are they going to run something in Cinerama with the three film projectors? I don’t go to the movies to watch video.

Hello-

for regular patrons of this theater I have a question. of all the Cinerama films(both the original 3-panel & the 70MM process) I believe The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm is the only one not yet released on blu-ray disc. recently I read the reason why was the original camera negative was damaged in a fire a few years back. this is where my question comes in. if I am not mistaken at a recent Cinerama Festival this theater held TWWOTBG was shown. so if a print was in good enough shape to show at the festival why hasn’t a blu-ray been issued?

There’s a new retrospective article out on “Camelot” which gives an overview of its roadshow run (including mention of its engagement here) and a historian interview.

At the Arclight they care about the customers and the presentation unlike AMC. The recent incident at Burbank just demonstrates if you really want a better show go to Hollywood.

And it is good they run both versions the film and the DCP and even 3D in some cases. I saw Dunkirk in the Dome in 70mm it looked spectacular. We are so lucky to have the Arclight as there are only two cities in the country that have a 70mm print of Orient Express.

Got some pics of theater 6 when I went to see Murder on the Orient Express in 70mm. You can see the 70mm film threaded up in the projection window.
