I only went to this theatre once, when it was a Mann theatre. And it was to see One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Where’s Poppa? with a friend and his mom and dad. It was cool. Had a walk up balcony.
I also remember driving by and seeing a mural painted on the back of it advertising Dog Day Afternoon with the caption indicating it was playing at Exclusively at the National Westwood. That was during the Fall of 1975.
Edward. Yes and No. The original lease for the National expired July 2006. They kept it running after that date until April 2007. May 2007 through Sept 2007 the Culver people leased it.
Well, The Wolf Man is not opening at Chinese, Arclight has tickets on sale now. On a ironic note, The Blind Side is moving back from Chinese 6 to Arclight this weekend. Looks like WB is expanding the run of Blind Side because of Oscars.
I would say that CLASH OF THE TITANS will open still @ Village, and HOT TUB @ Bruin. But the question is, are they the last films for the 2 theatres? Will the theatres suddenly close the day after Easter? Even when Mann did not renew the National, they kept it open on a short term month to month for an additional 10 months.
According to Mann Website THE BLIND SIDE and INVICTUS are opening Friday the 5th at the Village. I may go see BLIND, to see what all the fuss is about. Seems odd for them to bring back films but I guess there is not much more they can book. Less than 50 for ELI on Saturday night is not good. Were you able to talk to anyone there about closing date or if Mann will extend these leases a bit?
I’m old enough to remember going to the Fairfax when it was a single screen theatre. When Cineplex Odeon remodeled it and turned it first run I went quite often. Many of my favorite theatres growing up are gone or near gone. The Picwood in West LA, The Plitt Century Plaza Twins, Mann National and Laemmle’s Monica theatres when they were twin theatres are distant memories now.
Pretty soon the ultimate heartbreak will be when the Village and Bruin close. It seems a waste seeing the empty lot where the National stood; we could have had over 2 more years of pleasure of that great theatre by now. This all could explain why I stay home and watch Blu ray’s more than going as much as I used to, it is too depressing.
If I had the money I would buy the Crest and take over the leases of the Village and Bruin. Pretty soon Westwood will be theatre-less and we will never have the likes of these great theatres ever again.
Just went to see Sherlock Holmes; great presentation. The sound is amazing. They appear to be getting The Book of Eli next. Hopefully 2010 will be kinder than 2009 was to Grauman’s Chinese.
Good to hear that Rave is taking an interest in exhibition in L.A. I’ll have to walk down to the Beverly Center next week while I am on holiday break. I don’t think I have seen a film there since the mid-90’s.
True. I just find the AMC CENTURY 15 an unpleasant theatre. But I do agree getting the seats ahead of time is the best thing about filmgoing these days.
SHERLOCK HOLMES is opening at the Chinese and Chinese 6. Tickets are currently on sale. The Chinese 6 will be DBOX presentation. ALVIN & THE CHIMPMUNKS opens Dec. 23. These will be the only new movies opening at the CHINESE theatres.
Rave should look into reviving Westwood and take over the leases of the Village and Bruin, and perhaps move with the plans of the multiplex Mann was considering.

Princess and the Frog opens at Disney Studios for a 2 week run. Dec 11 opens wide, and will probably be at Arclight Hollywood. The El Capitan has A Christmas Carol booked through New Year’s.
Mann was booking Fox films in thier Westwood theatres during the mid-late 90’s into the early 2000’s. If it was 10 years ago no doubt Avatar would open at the Village, or perhaps the National.

COP OUT sounds right. They do seem to split the WB films between Arclight and Chinese.

This would be a difficult theatre to operate. Good bookings would be difficult and parking is awful around that area.
I may walk down to the Beverly Center this weekend and see Hurt Locker. Thanks for the info of the film being in the digital theatre.
I agree. The Los Feliz is awful in its current condition. Back when it was a single screen, it was very nice.
About 10 people. But it was the 10:45am show. The show afterwards seemed to be bigger. They have it on 2 of the 6 plex screens also.

The Malibu Cinema was a single screen originally, and was open during the 70’s. I would guess as far back as the early 70’s.
