Reportedly, the Crest has been sold by Bucksbaum. He has hinted that the neighborhood will be happy with the new proprietors, but did not say if that meant that the building will continue as a theatre or some other business. EAT PRAY LOVE will as such be the last film to play under his stewardship.
Mann probably would like to cut their Chinese showtimes down, but that would probably irritate the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who would want the place to retain normal and full theatre hours out of accomodation to the thousands of tourists that walk the streets, even though few of them are likely to buy a ticket.
The Crest has been limiting showtimes to 2 early evening showings only for Winter’s Bone. They probably figured to not show anything this week in order to cut expenses. Operating the theatre even for minimum showings still costs. I’d bet the electric bill is enough to choke a cow.
I’m surprised Mann hasn’t thought of this for the Chinese instead of playing to an empty audience.
Given the hints that the place has operated at a loss for a lot of Bucksbaum’s ownership, I doubt we’ll see anything so extravagant, Chris! I have actually found the seats there pretty comfortable.
Unfortunately, William’s probably dead on.
Upgraded seats would be nice. Cutting down the seats to add legroom ala The Vista would be better!
Sometimes it’s just cheaper to close for a week or two. Many theatres have done it in the past when the product is short or cost of staying open with a dud.
The Crest will be closed this coming week for “cleaning and renovations.” Curious if that just means the typical stuff or we’ll notice a difference. They’ll re-open on the 13th with “Eat, Pray, Love”.
Theatre designer Joseph Musil Jr. passed away on June 29th, 2010 after a long illness. He was 74 years old.

If I had the money I would buy the Crest and take over the leases of the Village and Bruin. Pretty soon Westwood will be theatre-less and we will never have the likes of these great theatres ever again.

This theater is spectacular. A real gem. Saw Nine there last week. The movie wasn’t so great but the theater just blew me away. Good sound, good screen, decent seats… and a beautiful auditorium. Someone buy it and preserve it!
