I have a pretty good film collection on video but I always perfer to see a film on a screen with an audiance even if I could watch it at home. I have “The Gang’s All Here” on a laser disc but I will still go see it at the Film Forum. Unfortunatly it will be the last film I see there untill October. (If the next program has some classic Hollywood films on it)
Does anyone know anything about a small theatre that was located about a block from the Coliseum at 150 Wadsworth Ave? It was showing porno films until the mid-nineties but I know this theatre had been showing films since about 1915. There is a store in the theatre building now but the original facade is still intack.
I saw the Incredable Mr. Limpet at the Tilyou. Was the Garden Theatre demolished. Never remember seing another theatre building across from the 46th street from the subway.

Hard to believe that if you rode the West End subway line into the 1950’s you would pass 8 theatres. Normandie,Loews 46th,Loews Boro Park,Hollywood,Loews Oriental,Benson,Stillwell & The Loews Coney Island. All gone now but at least except for the Boro Park, all the theatre buildings still exist.
As for the Oriental its a shame it could not have been saved. Even after the theatre was twinned and tripled the orchestra section, stage, walls and cieling were still intact. Since the restrooms were on the mezz. level there were no changes there either. Even in its last days the only thing missing was a few seats in scattered rows of the orchestra.
If you look at the calendar there are only 2 weeks of classic Hollywood films for the entire Summer/Fall. The Seven Year Itch playing now and “The Gang’s All Here” & “Cobra Woman” next month. (Both 1 week shows). I have no problem with a Samurai series because I know there are a lot of fans of those films. But I think more of the rest of the calendar could have been devoted to another classic Hollywood theme. 3 Hollywood films in 3 months is just not enough considering how many people buy memberships to the Film Forum. (Like myself.)
I agree. I might be there once in the next few months. For the Carman Miranda/Alice Faye film. Hope there are better films on tap on the Fall/Winter schedule.
I saw Fay Wray at that screening also. I was told recently that had Fay lived she was going to appear in the last scene of the King Kong remake that is being filmed now. Maybe that film could be premiered at Radio City like the original was. I would pay extra to see that.
I was at the concert also. Is the projection equipment still installed? I was in the 3rd mezz. but I could not see thru the projection slots. I remember seeing “Gone With The Wind” there in 1989 and that was after the change-over.
Yes, The Loew’s Oriental. Someone had told me several years before that Loew’s was leasing the property and when the lease ran out the theatre would close. And I guess the lease was up in 1995. There was no advance notice either. The employees were not told untill the last day.
I was at the 8 PM screening of “June Moon” and the show was sold out. I bought my ticket 3 hours in advance and the stand-bye line went half way up the block. By the way in attendance at this show was former actress and “Game Show” legend Kitty Carlisle. She was sitting right behind me and she really looked great for her age.
I never really believed that the Marboro would be rebuilt as a multi-plex. There is no place to park and no land for a garage. Even know the theatre is 3 blocks from the subway and it is served by a major bus route (B6) people will only come if they can bring their cars. Sad to say all we can do is wait until the building comes down or is gutted for retail space.
Why not try the Loew’s 175th st. Its still being used as a chuch by Rev. Ike but it is in good shape. The projectors might still be in house. I believe I saw them used on a PBS special last year.
The basement theatres were tiny. I saw Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure at one of them and it felt like you were watching the film on a big screen television. The screen was that small!

I was never there either. Did get to the Tilyou once.
Then we should include the Mermaid also.

I wonder how many other theatrs went from a quad back to a twin?
Lets not forget the Deluxe. Only 1 block from the Benson on Bath Ave. I saw movies there untill they switched to porn in the late 70’s.
When was the Olympia 4 theatres? I only remember it as a twin and I last went there in the late 90’s.

I really never believed that a theatre would be built but I was hoping it would happen. The last neighborhood theatre in this area closed in 1995.
I wonder what the architectural plans looked like. Is there anyplace where they would be on file and could be viewed?
The AMC 25 is the highest grossing theatre in the country so I do not think AMC would give it up. The E-Walk is another matter.
I beleve she came for the 6:30 showing of “Follow Thru” so the seats would have been roped off for that film also.

The Film Forum’s retro was solely Powell/Pressburger films.
Yes, It’s sad but you can also say that about most of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I think there are 12 theatres in the whole borough.
