Occasionally when looking at satellite photos of drive ins I see one with a more rounded shape as oposed to the mor common triangular shape. I wonder if these might have been Autoscopes, Because I have seen satellite photos of a converted autoscope wich was round but had the ramps and a single screen on one end. Of course some Autoscopes were probably plowed under and rebuilt into a more traditional D-I. Just some food for thought when looking at satellite photos or historical arials of old D-I locations. You might also look for a more rounded concession stand. It sure would be nice to find out how many existed, alas we will probably never now.

They should do some fundrasing and restore the back of that screen, it would be a big attraction to the area.

Are you sure this closed in the 70’s the marquee above says “imzy PG” what we can make out of the movie title, I am guessing but maybe “The Last Mimzy” That would put closing after 2000. Probably not though I am just dreaming.

Somewhere I saw a picture of this theater before manteo went crazy and went all colonial, I wish I could find it. It was neat it had a marquee and a ticket booth. I will look for it then see if I can get permission to post it.

Dive-In? Chuck I think you created a new name for a bad Drive-In. Of course in my opinion there all good Drive-Ins, even if it has a sheet nailed between 2 trees, and a man cooking burgers on a grill. Nothing beats a movie under the stars. I found nothing at or near this address on Google either, it must have been demolished soon after it closed.

The Outerbanks Music showcase is 180 in street view above. The theater listed here is a few miles to the north it was in the market place shopping plaza.

Kris4077 commented about Kitty Hawk 2 on Sep 26, 2013 at 6:05 pm

This was one of 2 theaters on the outer banks run by RC theaters, the other was a 4 screen in Nags Head which is now a fitness center. RC closed both these theaters when they opened the Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills. When they were renovating this theater for retail space, a wall collapsed killing 1 construction worker, they had to tear it down completely and build it new, Space id now occupied by Ritas, and Starbucks. There was also a theater in the plaza that houses the CHKD which is now the Outerbanks Music showcase which is a live theater.

FT. Bragg also had its own D-I right on Bragg Blvd. You can see it using the history feature on google earth.

This D-I has an odd outline it is round. Could this have been an auto-scope, one of those D-I’s that had a screen for every car? maybe it was changed to a regular drive in later. Or perhaps it has deteriorated or that just the way it was build. Speaking of auto-scopes I have a modern day digital twist on this Idea either using digital projection or LED TV’s all contained in a small shed with a roll up door one for each car.

Kris4077 commented about Fort Drive-In on Sep 25, 2013 at 5:55 pm

There was also a D-I on the army base if you go to the base on google earth and use the history feature you will see it, its on bragg blvd. I only know of 2 bases that have or had D-I theaters, ft. bragg, and recently I found a marine base on virgin islands that has an operating D-I. Looking at google earth it looks as though Bragg Blvd was littered with D-I’s in the haydays, the base kept them going then, and it probably still would.

Kris4077 commented about Fort Drive-In on Sep 25, 2013 at 5:43 pm

4691 is the correct address according to google earth. this looks like it opened as a twin with a Dos A Dos or back to back screen tower in the middle, a third screen looks to have been added by the road on the front lot. A car dealer now occupies the very front of the property, and way in the back of property it looks like a cell phone tower was built. It looks like all the screens are still there, the front screen is severely decayed. I think this D-I could be re-opened with some work.

Everything I have looked at shows this D-I still there minus its screen and ticket booth. Walmart is further north.
