Nobody “taunted or baited” anyone. That’s the only thing I can see from the August 15th post “rules” about “off topic” posts. You had no right to delete posts because the guys were discussing another film at some other theater. I resent you acting as a self appointed censor. I agree with Bill, I want to hear ANYTHING that Vito has to say. Put the posts back.
But there are always exceptions, right? I gave the reason up above as to why Vito posted what he did on this page. As far as I’m concerned, guys like Vito and REndres are HUMAN cinema treasures, and anything they have to say is something I’d want to hear.
From my understanding, the Ridgewood page is so out of hand, nobody wishes to spend days cleaning it up. No other thread will be allowed to become a general forum, having nothing to do with the theater. Above at August 15, 2008, the site’s policy is reiterated.

are the Harry Potter films digital or 35mm. I saw the first two films at the AFI Silver last year, and while they were in 35mm and looked great. I had forgotten how intense the soundmixes notably for ‘Chamber of Secrets’ is, the Quidditch scenes are quite a ride.
To cite the worst example of what Jeff is referring to, the page for the Ridgewood Theater in Queens has literally hundreds of off-topic posts, many of them nothing to do with movies at all. I don’t think any of them have ever been deleted.

When I receive an email that there’s a message in the Ziegfeld thread, I expect it to be there, regardless of what it’s about. I don’t expect it to be deleted because “you didn’t like it”. Why don’t you apply the same rules to ALL THE OTHER THREADS on every other theater on CT that goes “off topic”? (and there are MANY) Don’t play censorship traffic cop here.
or to continue the topic on hand, maybe Soderbergh could film ‘Cleopatra’ in 70mm and showcase them as such at theatres like the Ziegfeld that CAN project 70mm features.
Oh wait … to make sure my post about the new “Cleopatra” doesn’t get deleted, I hope it plays at the Ziegfeld.

I hear Soderbergh’s next project will be a remake of “Cleopatra”! I guess he’s been bitten by the extremely-long-movie bug.
Giles added “The Defiance” I hadn’t realized “Benjamin Button” would be there for so little time. I’m borrowing a Chicago page post from a fellow who’s no stranger to NYC, so this starts at the Ziegfeld on Friday:
I work in a screening faciiltiy which does quite a bit of work for Steven Soderbergh, and we’ve been screening “Che” from early versions to the current roadshow version that is being released in some cities this week. It would indeed be ideal at the McClurg. The first half is in Scope, and the 2nd half after intermission is “Flat” or 1.85 aspect ratio. Both halves are preceeded by an Overture with maps on the screen highlighting locations in the respective half. There is also exit music for both halves. Their office is releasing a cue sheet with the picture that will include pictures taken from our screen showing the relationship of the subtitles to the frame. There are no plans to release the roadshow version on film, and all screenings will be done digitally, but it’s definitely the sort of thing the McClurg large house would have done.

Clearview’s website indicates that following the Harry Potter marathan, on Christmas Day, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” will start at the Ziegfeld.
In fairness to Vito, I started all this by posting this here last month:
I hope “The Day the Earth Stood Still ” is the Christmas attraction at the Ziegfeld. Maybe I’ll find out tomorrow.

Vito’s comment appeared & then disappeared because this is not a “discuss any movie” thread. As comments above indicate, the Ziegfeld will soon have 2 special showcase engagements: “Che” and the Harry Potter marathon. Both special engagements can be found at the Clearview website and each is actually relevant to this thread.
Vito: if you e-mail me at the above address I’ll let you know what happened. Sorry about all this non-Ziegfeld stuff.

I wrote about the dreadfull remake of
“The Day The earth Stood Still” but it never appeasred.
Was it something I said that caused the last few posts to be removed? That never happened to me before on CT and I feel bad about it. Please let me know what I did so I won’t do it again.

Saw Quantum of Solace yesterday afternoon and I thought it was great! Craig has done another amazing job as Bond. I agree with Bill that the editing in the action sequences was so fast and furious that is was difficult to know what was going on, but…..I thought it was a great film nonetheless. I would say there were about 75-100 people for the 2:00 PM showing, which is probably not bad.
No Curtains! :–(
But helpful and polite staff as always. This theater is always a joy to attend.

Exciting News! Harry Potter Marathon is coming to The Ziegfeld!
“The Ultimate Harry Potter Movie Experience!”
at the world famous Clearview Cinemas Ziegfeld Theatre
December 19th – 24th, 2008
I wouldn’t say that Carpenter’s version of “The Thing” was true or faithful to the original short story. His version was more “inspired by the short story,” than was the 1951 version, which was more “based upon.” What bothers me about the Carpenter version is that it goes over the top with the SFX and doesn’t have anywhere near the tension of the ‘51 version. I remember that when I first saw the '51 version — on only a 13" TV! — I was glued to it, but when I first saw the Carpenter version — rented on VHS but viewed on a bigger TV — I mostly laughed at the SFX and felt little suspense at all. Still, after many viewings, I like the Carpenter version for its mood and setting, though the dialogue in it makes the '51 version seem like “Citizen Kane.”
As for the remake of “The Day The Earth Stood Still”…. this makes about as much sense as doing the “reimagining” of “Planet of the Apes” did, and I’ll bet you that ten years from now most film buffs will still be mostly talking about the original.
“Quantum of Solace” looked and sounded great at the Ziegfeld today. I just wasn’t sure what was happening on the screen or in the story at any given time. There’s nothing new about fast editing of action sequences in Bond movies, but these scenes were fast to the point of incoherence. Maybe Bond fans younger than me wouldn’t think so. I also felt old while watching the trailer for the new “Star Trek” movie. It sure ain’t your grandfather’s “Star Trek”.
Next attraction at the Ziegfeld: “Che”, on December 12th for one week only. 4 hours + intermission.
“Paradise Lost” could generate a terrific movie. Milton, whose 400th birthday occurs on 9 December (New Yorkers: rush to the Morgan Library on 37 and Madison to see the magnificent exhibit), was a dramatist at heart, and the unaltered text would provide great dialogue. I’ve never seen a film at the Ziegfeld, but might make a special trip there if it showed that one.
