I know the summer of 1977 the Astor Plaza had “Star Wars”, and the State must have had 2 better pictures for “Orca” to have opened at the Criterion. Paramount films usually played Loew’s Theatres. View link
I’m still suprised this closed, the two Crossbays are in a clear booking zone and can play anything they want. This theatre was actually in much better shape then the newer Crossbay 2.

I felt the same way you did. I saw War of Worlds at Loews Raceway which has good size screens but it looked small in flat. All I kept thinking was imagine seeing this in Cinerama.
The UA plexing was one thing, what about letting theatres turn into rundown pig styes like they did with this, the Bayside, Continental, Squire, Manhasset and almost every other place they have.
It just dawned on me do you think they re-opened the Plaza this way to keep the CO current? Many places do that before plexing. Remember after the Murray Hill collapse they re-opened it again as a single for 2 months then closed it to quad it.
When Walter Reade left the Continental Heskel ran it himself for a few years before partnering with UA. View link
Also in the photo caption it says this was once known as the Austin, thats not this theatre thats the present Kew Garden Cinemas that used to be called the Austin. Reade opened this as the Continental Cinema in I believe 1957.
I remember so well seeing “Orca” here in 1977, by no means a great film but summer fun anyways.

The next film on the track was “Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane” I will find it tonight, I think that took the Madison to the end of August 1977.

What a beautiful place, may it last forever !!
Funny thing I have never seen a film here.
This was the same theatre. They hacked it up in a way that can’t be described. It made no sense.

It sounds like a hovel, what was the auditorium like?

Here it is in 1977 known as Triplex Paramus, sounds like they were not sure who owned it at the time :)
