I presume this theatre is closed today, as people mentioned in comments on other pages here.

A New York Times article from July 21, 1982, said: “THE largest movie theater complex in the United States opened last week in a new shopping center in Los Angeles. There are 14 movie screens tucked away on the eighth floor of the Beverly Center mall in West Hollywood.” I guess one of the screens must have closed later.

I thought today was supposed to be the big Rebranding Day … but in today’s Boston Globe, all five of our remaining Loews Cineplex theatres are still advertised with Loews logos and names (for instance, “Loews Theatres At The Loop” in Methuen, MA)

So it’s closed today — but may not stay closed for long.

From today’s Boston Herald:

Loews leaves Cambridge site to new operator
The Loews Fresh Pond Cinema closed its doors last night, but it may not stay dark for long, as a South Easton-based theater operator plans to take over the site.

Bill Hanney, principal with Entertainment Cinemas in South Easton, says his company has a deal to operate the cinema and plans to show first-run movies, perhaps starting in a week.
If I were the one taking over this place, I’d want much more than a week to fix it up and rebrand it. It does not have a good reputation right now.

When I walked by around 7:30 pm, they hadn’t taken down any of the Loews signage. I expect that process will take a few months.

Looks like they finally put Friday showtimes up for this theatre at EnjoyTheShow.com a few hours ago. Sorry for the false alarm, folks.

Also, here’s a list of AMC theatres, in convenient XML form. The AMC website’s Flash apparently uses this to generate part of its display:

View link

(On some browsers such as Safari and Opera, you’ll need to do a View Source to actually see this file’s contents.)

It would be interesting to download this XML file again tomorrow, and compare it with today’s file.

And it looks like the Metreon and Universal IMAXen are alive and well too. Their showtimes are just listed along with all the others in those two megaplexes, rather than on their own separate pages.

(I was getting the list of all theatres by entering nothing in the “Theatre Search” field in the left bar, and then hitting the second red “SEARCH” button. The entries for “Loews IMAX” and “Universal IMAX” probably just shouldn’t be in the search results.)

OK, I guess I jumped the gun a bit. But besides the ones dave-bronx listed, these also still have no Friday showtimes:

North Riverside 6, IL
River Oaks 1-6 and 9-10, Calumuet City, IL

The Lincoln IMAX is not closing. It has both Harry Potter and “Roving Mars: Exclusively in IMAX Theatres” scheduled starting Friday.

From The Alewife, a North Cambridge newspaper blog:

Loews letters lowered; ‘King Kong’ the last picture show

“The letters spelling out L-O-E-W-S at the movie theater at Fresh Pond Mall were removed today before employees reported for work at 3 p.m.”

If you follow the link above, you will in fact see a photo of the façade with those letters removed.

Well, I know for a fact that Fresh Pond is closing, and other people have told me that Beverly Center and Loews State are closing. So I suspect that some others on the list are closing as well.

I just now clicked through the showtimes for every theatre listed at EnjoyTheShow.com . The following have no showtimes listed after Thursday, January 26:

Beverly Center 13, Los Angeles CA (no shows after 4:40 pm Thursday)
Catalina Cinemas 6, Tucson, AZ
Cherry Hill, NJ
Fresh Pond 10, Cambridge MA (no shows after 7:45 pm Thursday)
Loews 34th Street, NYC
Loews Cineplex Rockville Center 2, NY (no showtimes listed even for today)
Loews Danbury 10, CT
Loews IMAX, San Francisco, CA (no showtimes listed even for today)
Loews State 4, NYC
Menlo Park 12, Edison, NJ
North Riverside 6, IL
River Oaks 1-6, Calumet City, IL (no shows after 8:45 pm Thursday)
River Oaks 9-10, Calumet City, IL (say, what happened to theatres 7 and 8?)
Roosevelt Field 8, Garden City, NY
Route Seventeen 3, Paramus, NJ (no showtimes listed even for today)
Star Great Lakes Crossing, Auburn Hills, MI
Star Holland, MI
Universal IMAX (no showtimes listed even for today)

I’m curious which of these are closing, and which are being sold off to other operators.

I don’t see what AMC can do to improve Assembly Square’s quality, other than close it and replace it with a modern stadium-seating megaplex. (I think Loew’s wanted to do exactly that several years ago, but went bankrupt before they could do so.)

Ron Newman commented about Loews State 4 on Jan 25, 2006 at 1:05 pm

I bet that AMC is acquiring all of Loew’s trademarks as well as its theatres.

Ron Newman commented about Loews State 4 on Jan 25, 2006 at 8:49 am

The merger is supposed to close Friday. Don’t know what’s going to happen with the websites — neither AMC’s nor Loew’s website right now provides any clue.

All of the other NYC Loews theatres, except this one and the State, have showtimes listed after tomorrow at EnjoyTheShow.com . But yeah, we’ll see on Friday….

Ron Newman commented about AMC 34th Street 14 on Jan 25, 2006 at 5:52 am

No showtimes are listed for this theatre on Loew’s website (EnjoyTheShow.com) after tomorrow. Then, starting on February 10th, just one movie is scheduled. What’s going on here?

Ron Newman
Ron Newman commented about Loews State 4 on Jan 25, 2006 at 5:36 am

On the Loews website (EnjoyTheShow.com) there are no showtimes listed for the State after tomorrow.

Whether this is reliable, I don’t know. It also lists no showtimes between January 27 and February 9 for Loews 34th Street.

Is it used for anything now? Sometimes drive-ins make good locations for outdoor swap meets, for instance.

Ron Newman commented about Loew's Jersey Theatre on Jan 24, 2006 at 12:04 pm

Yes, but my question was different. Besides the Loew’s Jersey, are there any other theatres now operating that still use “Loew’s” in their name, but are not part of Loews Cineplex (and therefore will not be part of AMC)?

> Couldn’t the Jersey have found some animal themed films from the 1930’s

perhaps Bringing Up Baby ?

Ron Newman commented about Wang Theatre on Jan 24, 2006 at 6:58 am

Sadly, I must report that the Wang Center has discontinued its Motion Picture Mondays film series. I confirmed this with a phone call to the theatre this morning.

No movie has been shown here since last spring. I think the last one was “Dirty Dancing” in April.

Boston still has some old movie palaces operating … but it no longer has any movies showing in them.

Time to take “Movies” off the Function: listing at the top of this page.

Ron Newman commented about Apple Cinemas Cambridge on Jan 24, 2006 at 6:43 am

I have it on pretty good authority that this theatre is closing after those Thursday evening shows.

Whether it’s because AMC doesn’t want the property, or because they couldn’t reach a new lease agreement in time, I’m not sure. Also unclear is whether it might eventually reopen under different ownership. Stay tuned…
