This, of course reminds me of them tearing down that GREAT CINERAMA theater, the Indian Hills, to make a hospital parking lot, even after all those protests!
When this drive-in opened on May 23, 1997, it was the first movie theatre to operate in Athens since the early 1980s. The movie shown opening night was “THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK” The Decatur Daily ran two articles on the theatres’s opening day, one which was appropiately titled “An outdoor dinosaur lives again!”. The original screen was 54 feet by 24 feet. Instead of having the old-style speakers on poles, it uses low-power FM transmitter, so you hear the movie in stero on your car’s FM radio. A second screen was added in 2000 and removed in 2005 in order to build the five-screen Cinemagic Theatre. The drive-in has operated every summer except the summer of 2001. The booth is now in the Cinemagic Theater.
The Cinemagic Theater was built on part of the Cinemagic Drive-In (also listed on CT). The drive-in was reduced from two screens to one. It opened on May 26, 2006 with three screens operating showing “THE DA VINCI CODE”, “OVER THE HEDGE”, and “X-MEN: THE LAST STAND”. On June 16, 2006 it began full operation with all five screens operating, showing “CARS”, “GARFIELD: A TALE OF TWO KITTIES”, “THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT”, “NACHO LIBRE” and “THE OMEN”.

Chris, I don’t disagree with you, I only wrote what I read, here’s the exact quote “The Dolby Theatre—home of the Academy Awards—will have its grand opening on June 18 with the premiere of Disney/Pixar’s "BRAVE”, as part of the Los Angles Film Festival."
I was wondering if anyone knows if a film has ever been shown before, except for the clips at the Oscars. “Iris” has no show on Monday night so I would guess that is when the movie premieres will take place.
Anyone know if when they showed “THIS IS CINERAMA” at the Cinema 150, did they show it on the FULL Dimension 150 SCREEN with the D-150 Super Curvulon Projection Lens or was it shown on the masked off 70mm screen?
I don’t know about New Orleans, but in some cities the booth unions insisted on a crew of two for 70mm. This could have been the reason the Palace switched to 35mm?
Thanks again Michael, look at the interesting coments you generate!
Above reads 1936 and shoud read 1836. R.H. Walker was the owner and builder of the Ritz, who also owned and edited the Limestone County Democrat Newspaper. The first two movies shown at the Ritz were the United Artists 1927 “MY BEST GIRL” with Mary Pickford and Buddy Rogers . United Artist was founded in 1919 by Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. The other movie was a MGM 1928 comedy “FAIR AND MUDDY”.
Was the first address a different site of the theatre (now a church) or did Athens change its street numbering system?
The site of the Ritz is now the Athens Fire Department, did they use any of the Ritz Building?
CT could use photos, both inside and out, and more info.
A little more detail. In 1961 CINERAMA had 53 theatres in the United States and Canada, with 30 more in Foreign Countries for a total of 83 theatres. This did not include SUPER-CINERAMA THEATRES WORLDWIDE!
From the 1961 CINERAMA Annual Report:
“CINERAMA THEATRES OF TOMORROW, CINERAMA’s new concept in theatre design — SUPER-CINERAMA—whereby giant curved screen constitutes the entire fourth wall of the theatre, from ceiling to floor and from wall to wall. SUPER-CINERAMA theatres are of ultra modern design, and the entire interior is decorated in one color, enhancing audience conentration on the motion itself.”
In 1961 7 theatres had been reconverted to SUPER-CINERAMA theaters:
Atlanta-Martain CINERAMA
Brussels-Varieties
Copenhagen-Kinopalet
Lima-Republica
Los Angeles-Warner CINERAMA
New York-Loew’s CINERAMA
Washington, D.C.-Uptown
14 newly constructed SUPER-CINERAMA theaters:
Boston-Commonwealth
Chicago-Martin CINERAMA (never built as far as I know, to bad)
Denver-Cooper CINERAMA
Houston-Boone
Minneapolis-Cooper CINERAMA
New Orleans-Martin CINERAMA
Omaha-Cooper CINERAMA
Paris-Empire Abel Gance
San Antonio-Martin CINERAMA
San Diego-L&G CINERAMA
San Francisco-Martin CINERAMA
Seattle-Martin CINERAMA
St. Louis-Martin CINERAMA (“to have screen using three walls”)
Toronto-To be named
So thats a total of 21 SUPER-CINERAMA theatres, counting those that might not have got built.
That brings us to 104 CINERAMA theatres in 1961.
When “ITS A MAD WORLD” came out I was excited to see it without those darn two lines on the screen at the Loew’s CINERAMA in New York. If I understand it right 70mm CINERAMA had to mask a lot of the sides of the screen and at the top! I guess I got cheated, bring back the lines and the full screen. What good is wall to wall, ceiling to floor screen if its been masked off? So much for SUPER-CINERAMA theaters!
“KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA” in SUPER-CINERAMA, how much of the screen did that fill? I think its all a lot of fluff, like cotton candy!
C, I don’t think so, nickelodeons began in about 1905 and started to decline in about 1913. They were in converted storefronts and you sat on wood benches. The Dixie was built as a theatre in 1915 on the second floor.
This, of course reminds me of them tearing down that GREAT CINERAMA theater, the Indian Hills, to make a hospital parking lot, even after all those protests!
I’ve been in this store, they have lots of neat stuff and it you need a T shirt this is the place to go!
