Thanks Mike (saps)! Yes the was the great theatre building spree of the late 90’s & early 2000’s that had Loews Cineplex, Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatre Circuit & General Cinemas all building these huge multiplex cinemas everywhere without much research involved in the actual business aspect of the locations themselves. It promptly drove each one of these chains into bankruptcy a few years later.

Loews announced this theatre, but had to wait for the municipality to make changes to the surrounding roads and other infrastructure adjustments before they could begin construction. As with most government projects, they moved at a snails pace. In the meantime the 24-screen plex down the street, which was announced after the Loews was announced, got built and opened long before the Loews and had captured the audience.
The Loews theatre had a total of 4172 seats. When it closed [in February 2001, a little more than a year after it opened,] all of the equipment was removed and most of it re-installed in the new Loews 34th Street in New York, which was just being completed at the time the North Versailles was closing.
They are apparently in the process of installing reserved seating in this cinema, as seats and rows are now being individually lettered and numbered. The old Irwin seats that date back to 1999 when they were first installed in the Loews North Versailles however are still being kept for now, unfortunately they have a lot of wear and tear on them.
The Loews 34th street along with its sister theater Kips Bay were the second to last modern day Loews stadium seating theaters to be built and not renovated; the E Walk after Regal took over, they renovated the theaters and put in an RPX screen with reclining seats and reserved seating.
You complain about the Loews name compared to AMC. They are the same since AMC bought Loews or merged. You should have been in the Boston area in the 40’s-60’s when we had both the Loews State & Loews Orpheum along with all the downtown, West End and other suburban E.M. Lowes theatres. They were not related. Then at one time Loews bought out USA(SACK) cinemas and most of the E.M. Lowes theatres became Indies or were torn down or just closed and left to rot.
They should probably update it and be more like the Empire as well as 84th street. The last time I passed by the marquee was in lousy condition — bulbs out, crawl not working…
I hope this theater gets recliners like some of the AMCs in nyc.
I remembered coming here in last year I saw 5 movies in IMAX at this theater the imax screen look different from the Lincoln Square imax screen version, as I put on the 3D glasses I said dammmmmnnnnn They got a good imax projection system .for that I’m thinking about seeing the finest hour in IMAX at this theater tommorow
Sometimes complaining to Corporate works, A few months ago some bean-counter Manager got the bright idea to remove the paper towels from the rest rooms. Now if the hand dryers that are in there currently are inadequate and do not do a very good job in dying your hands, you leave with them still wet, also they are located over the counter in between the sinks, not the most ideal place for a hand dryer to be. To dry our hand properly we would have to go to concession stand to grab napkins to use to dry our hands with. Well we kept complaining over to AMC Corporate and voila, the hand towels are back in the restroom.
This theater’s proximity to Macy’s and the Garden make it a popular tourist attraction for New Yorkers.
WHAT LANGUAGE WAS THAT ?? How does Loew’s Jersey keep the Loew’s name(I am glad they do ). The Kings is a beautiful theater no doubt, but the Jersey is out of this world beautiful with a pipe organ that will thrill you over & over. Kings should re-think the offer to give the original massive theater organ back to the people that own the Kings…It really would be the icing on the cake!!
I beleive that Loews is a brand of AMC . In NYC the Loews name goes back for nearly a century. The newspaper listings usually says AMC Loews so and so cinema
Is there a Loews company anymore? Or are they just using the name. Now that AMC has been sold, I wonder if the Loews name will be dropped altogether..
I was here for the second time last month, and all was fine . Yes, tickets are $14- but it’s midtown Manhatten.
This theater is not too far from MSG.
This theater has caught on, because there always seems to be a nice crowd — not over-packed, but just enough to have a good movie-going experience. I especially like the bargain matinees, and its proximity to Penn Station.
I worked at a group that showed Transformers 2 in the IMAX screen. It was said that T2 would have scenes filmed in IMAX to support IMAX screens. Well, the screen, surprisingly works with it. Scenes did turn from IMAX to 35mm. It’s slightly bigger than 42nd’s but so much smaller than 68ths.
I saw Taking of Pelham 123 here on Thursday. Overall a good moviegoing experience , despite 3 minor complaints. I agree there should be restrooms on both levels. The existing ones should have been cleaner at 11 am on a weekday. And in auditorium 12 there is a musty odor from the carpeting when you first enter. I did not sample any of the concession items.
The theatre opened on November 2nd, 2001 with the premiere engagements being Monsters, Inc. (on three screens), Domestic Disturbance (on three screens), The One (on two screens), The Man Who Wasn’t There (on two screens), K-PAX (on two screens), Bandits and Thirteen Ghosts.
West 34th Street should be an aka here.
In November of this year, this theatre, along with The AMC Empire 25 and the AMC Loews Kips Bay 15, will be a Digital IMAX Theatre.
I went to the latest Indiana Jones there – literally – out of desperation – due to sold out shows at other theatres.
Here’s what I found.
A big – stadium seating – theatre with an enormous semi-curved screen (theatre 13)…..
good seats (the leather ones were insane) – plenty of leg room ……
Vacumed floors…semi clean restrooms – varied and plentiful candy counters…
excellent sound…
pleasent crowd..
I’m a 34th street boy from now on!
Is this place doing any business yet?
I attended several screenings here as part of the Tribeca Film Fest. I attended at least two screenings in theatre 11 and there was a problem with sound leakage from the booth into the theatre. It sounded as if the sound from one of the other theatres leaked into theatre 11. It appeared to be coming from the projection booth so it could have been someone playing a radio in the projection booth, people talking in the booth or people outside in the lobby talking. It was very annoying.
I didn’t notice the noise problem occuring in Theatre 10, which is across the lobby from Theatre 11, 12 & 13.
