The closest Cinemark theater, and the only one in NJ that will be affected by the merger, is in Somersdale, NJ and like Rockaway, is a 16 plex.
Unlike 35mm, computers will have bugs. Imagine what would happen if an error screen popped up during a 4k screening of “Star Trek” or if there are pixelation issues or sound sync issues with the showing. That’s the downside of digital projection vs 35mm. Another issue could be a massive computer worm like the Conficker virus that would infect the 4k systems and the theater would be closed for a computer checkup during the off hours. Recently AMC’s profit was down as audiences went to cheaper theaters.
Hey Justin, FYI, I run digital where I work, along with 35MM. There is NO art to running digital. Its a computer and all you do is push a button. Any idiot can do that. I want to see someone make reel-toreel changeovers like I use to. THAT"S an art.
Advance tickets are now available for the new “X-Men” movie as well as “Star Trek”.
any word on when the new sony 4k projectors get installed? If it happens, then the projectionists who run the 35mm projectors will lose their jobs and be replaced by technicians who will master the art of showing digital movies.

Out of all these theaters, Rockaway is not listed. Also, starting this weekend, $25 “Star Trek” gift cards are on sale featuring characters from the upcoming “Star Trek” movie, which I’ll definitely see on the big screen at this theater, as well as the new “X-Men” movie instead of watching it on a tiny computer screen!
I’ve been checking the showtimes for upcoming movies, and no movie says digital projection. When will it be installed at this theater?
Once all 16 screens are fitted with 4k, then people will come to this theater to experience what they can’t see on a blu-ray disc or on an HD cable service.
I dunno….AMC at one time tried to show movies with 16mm projectors in the early years and it didn’t fare well.
All of which will be outdated and needed to be replaced in a decade.
But how many times does a 35/70 projector need to be replaced?
Hah! AMC are a bunch of boneheads – great to hear the latest news with Sony and it’s 4K system rollout, but talk about flip flopping, DLP, IMAX-Digital, REAL-D and now Sony… jeesh make up your flippin' minds (?!)
Thanks for the comment, SlimShady.
^^ yep that is correct… Sony 4K will be used… the date could’ve been moved up because it’s still tentative…
This just in….

Kansas?
didn’t heard from me… but all AMC theatres going digital only in NY/NJ market first.. Transition Work begans from Jan. 2010… this is an insider top secret..once NY is complete they’re going to move on to LA/Kansas and then throughout US… so have patience..
Monsters vs Aliens did really well at the box office this weekend, with the 3-D version accounting for 56% of the gross. Hopefully they install 3-D in time for Terra Firma, which opens May 1st against the new X-Men movie, and Up, which is the first Pixar movie to be in 3-D.
During the weekday afternoons, Paul Appel tears tickets and directs the moviegoer to the nearest theater. He’s in a wheelchair and got his training from previous experience at the AMC in East Hanover through Employment Horizons, a non-profit employment agency that helps people with disabilities. He does a good job.
To be determined. The same could be said of the AMC in Kips Bay, NYC.
The AMC website doesn’t have the Rockaway 16 listed as a IMAX coming soon, but does list Tysons Corner as “TBD”. I wonder what that means.
“According to the LF Examiner website (LF=Large Format), Rockaway 16 is now scheduled for a flat screen IMAX 3D system for June 30, 2009. We’re listed as a future theater which may not open on time or at all. Here we go again! Check it out…

Rockaway 16 is listed under NY, not NJ.

and yet that list also mentions AMC Tysons Corner has having it’s IMAX screen up and running as of last month – that never happened. AMC is being vague on when or even if Tyson’s is getting it’s promised IMAX-Digital screen, a response of ‘sometime in the summer’ is a chincy way of AMC being non-committed/hypocritical of what they promise theatregoers.
but also IMAX-Digital screens can also project 2K DLP ‘films’ – but yes, REAL-D systems are much cheaper than IMAX-Digital 3D, it just seems that AMC can’t seem to think straight or figure out what they want to do in regards to the digital conversion of their theatres. Pick a system and stick with it.
One reason why is that RealD is cheap compared with IMAX Digital. As more and more 3d movies come out, newer theaters will have access to 3d projectors that they can use for 2d movies as well, as is the case with Clearview and other chains.
I remember reading the time when AMC were all gun ho and going to do a massive National roll out of DLP units, that never happened and with the current state of the recession, I’m surprised that AMC is all excited about RealD – I’ll believe it when I see it, my neighborhood AMC should be among the next wave of AMC theatres to be upgraded [‘I’m waiting’ taps fingers on desk]
Breaking news…apparently AMC is going to add RealD in some of its theaters….
