What a great little theater this is. This theater is a twin not a single screen theater as listed above. The balcony was converted into a smaller theater. The downstairs auditorium is a nice size and they have beautilful grey curtains that rise up. Is is so nice to have a theater that uses curtains instead of slides or a blank white screen.
It was after Walter Reade gave it up. It was in Aug 75. The opening was a doubel feature for $1.00. I remember one film was Jacquele Susan’s Once Is Not Enough. I don’t think it lasted long as a $1.00 theater. Right after that it became the Mark 1,2,3 and that didn’t last long. The last owner was the Guild organization.

The Demille did have a stage before they split it up. I interviewed their in 1976 when they were going to reopen as a dollar house. I rememeber the big stage and the redcurtains which were kept in the downstairs theater when they split it up.

When I lived back in that area in 1982-1983 the theater was still open and was a twin. I am not sure when it closed. It was run at the time by Budco than AMC.
I agree with an earlier post, Disney should purchase the Embassy 2,3,4 aka Demille and restore it like the El Capitan in CA. They could have also purchased the Times Square theater.
Does anybody know what happened to this theater? When I was in Phila in 2000 it was boarded up and for sale or lease. I thought the theater opened in 1974 as Eric’s Place with The Towering Inferno.
The Embassy is the old Demille. I think the insdie was kept the same even thought they took some away from the outsdie and I would assume lobby. I know they spliut the balcony in two and I think the downstairs was lef tthe same. The only thing I rememebr from sownstairs is they removed the stage. When Guild took it over they used the same curtains that were on the stage of the Demille,
Anybody know why the Cinema Latino didn’t take off? I t seemed like a great idea. I saw in the Times yesterday that the theater is back to 62nd and Broadway. I agree about the name. I feel the same way about United Artists 64 & 2nd. Theaters should have regular names.
I for one would boycott the theater if I still lived in NYC. I think this country is out of control with the Spanish issue. This is America and the Spanish population should realize that if they are going to live in the US they need to learn our language. You don’t see the French or Germans or any other foreign person asking that there language be spoken.
When we started spending summers in Atlantic City around 1966, the theater was already converted into a bowling alley. I spent many wonderful years bowling there until the casinos came in and it was knocked down and turned into a parking lot
The last year the Hollywood was open was 1977. The opened on Memorial day weekend with King KOng and closed the following week with no explaination

The theater closed around 1977. The last movie there was Greased Lightning. They never took it off the marquee and it got demolished witht he building to make way for a parking lot.
They never put an office building on the site. It is now a Holiday Inn hotel. When RKo closed the Stanley theater in Phila in 1969 they also promised to build twin theaters and it never happened. The theater stayed closed and borded up for years. They finally put the stock market building on the site.
The theater did run films concurrent with the World in Phila. I rememebr they showed Romeo and Juilet and A Man For All Seasons in the miuddle 60’s. At that time the theater was operated by William Goldman chain not RKO Stanley Warner.

I sure do rememebr you. I worked at the Festival on and off from 80-82. My manager there was tranferred to the Baronet/Coronet around 81. His name was Joe Torres. It makes me sick to see what they have done with all the old movie theaters in NYC. I am glad I moved from there in 1983 because it would be very difficult to see the buildings gone. I worked at Bowery Ssavings when they were on the corner of 60th and 3rd so I knew that area very well. I ate at the Chinesse restaurant above the Coronet all the time. Yes the subway stops right up the street on Fordham Road. I agree it would be like going to Madison Sq Garden on the subway.I just heard the neighborhood is terrible. It may not be safe to walk.

I remember the Palace having movies in the late 60’s until they booked Applause with Lauren Bacall. It’s been a legit house ever since.

This theater needs to be updated to Closed. The theater can also be seen in The Jazz Singer with Neil Diamond.

I think they played a film in the 80’s by John Waters called Polyester.
