Due to popular demand, the “Toy Story” double feature will extend its run this weekend. What’s the latest on the second 4k screen? I was so looking forward to seeing “Where the Wild Things Are” in digital projection; looks like I’ll have to go to mansfield. There’s an update on the rockaway protest at http://www.dailyrecord.com/ According to the site, one of the protesters got hurt so police were called on saturday night to protect the moviegoers from the protesters.

Starting on November 19, AMC is showing the first “Twilight” movie at 9 p.m. for $6, followed by the midnight showings of “New Moon”, one out of six showtimes are sold out. What’s the status on the second 4k screen?
came back from a 1:55 showing of whip it. during the preview for mr. fox, there was a splice, and another near the end of the movie. presentation was very good. it wasn’t packed like toy story 3d, which im skipping.
The next movie I want to check out at this theater is Paranormal Activity, which some people are calling the next Blair Witch Project. It’s playing on two screens (just like Couples Retreat), and if it does well, it will have legs at this theater. After Toy Story is done, perhaps AMC will show “Where the Wild Things Are” in digital on one screen and on another with the closed captions/descriptive video system, which I hope they keep for those who are blind and or deaf.
One other note….the lights in the men’s room after the movie was over was dimmed. They should fix the lights the next time I visit this theater. The men’s room was near the arcade. One bright side was that the cashiers behind the box office highly recommended the movie since they saw it for free. The movie was good, and they showed some decent trailers. I can’t wait to see 2012 in 4k at this theater, as it is one of the movies that will be shown in that format by Sony.
More info on my visit to the theater last night…it was a 4:45 showing, although the showtime wasn’t printed right on the ticket but the auditorium was right. The cleaners near the screen told us that the movie was almost over after the 2:30 showing. The crowd was about 15-20 out of 360 seats. With the IMAX formatting, the only screen with 360 seats will be theater #9. I hope the allow some spaces for the disabled.
came back from zombieland. sound was great but projection was blurry. i sat above the non stadium seating section. the theater i was in is the one that will get imax.
When IMAX-D comes this december, expect higher prices for showings of movies, even a few dollars more than the 3D Digital showings. At least AMC will still use AM Cinema for those who have deep pockets.
I have seen IMAX digital, RealD, and real full size IMAX. IMAX digital has a much smaller screen. AMC Bay Street 16 in Emeryville turned a regular sized auditorium into an IMAX auditorium by installing a slightly bigger screen. I was not impressed by the size. The picture quality seemed pretty good, but I could hardly tell the difference between the IMAX digital quality and regular 35mm film. In fact, IMAX digital looked practically the same as RealD. However, RealD usually can only be used on smaller screens because there is not enough light coming from a RealD projector to fill big screens. The IMAX digital sound system was slightly better than what used to be there. The bass was deeper and the sound was a little louder.
I am curious as to why Rockaway is getting an IMAX system when it already has one (and soon two) RealD systems. Is it normal for a theater to have both? What could IMAX do with two projectors that RealD has successfully done with one? Is it a cost-based decision? And if nothing else changes (e.g., screen size) will the average person even notice any difference? I have never seen an IMAX digital presentation so I’ll be curious to see which is better. If anybody has, how does it compare to RealD? So far, all of the RealD shows have been spectacular.
BTW, what surround sound format is used for the 4k auditorium (and the one to open soon)? Does it have more channels than the regular Dolby Digital EX that is in every other auditorium? As for the digital IMAX, I can’t wait. It will be my first time seeing an IMAX movie in a regular auditorium. I’ve seen an IMAX movie twice at Lincoln Square, and the print was a bit scratched a few months after it came out (the movie was “L5”), and there were minor splices. IMAX digital will help IMAX advance into the next generation and is less heavier than the giant film reels that IMAX uses in its old auditoriums.
reald only plays through one projector.. whereas digital imax requires two projectors combined.. creating one image.. That’s the only difference between reald and digi-imax

Advance tickets are now on sale for the new Michael Jackson movie, as well as the upcoming Toy Story double feature in 3-D, which is the next 3-D movie that this theater will play after Cloudy ends its run.
Other than showing the “Deck the Halls” movie days before it came out, has this theater ever shown a rough cut of a movie months before it came out? I hope they do a program similiar to what Jeffrey Lyons did with his Coming Attractions series, which I enjoyed at the old AMC Loews Meadow Six, Wayne 14, and Route 4 Tenplex.
Checking out the new releases that begin at midnight at this theater come October 1st, the new Michael Moore film isn’t playing. They played Sicko when it came out but that movie bombed. Seems that AMC is showing less indie and more blockbuster films. BTW, the Wizard of Oz movie returned to Rockaway after it was shown at the old theater back in 1998, this time using the preshow projectors rather than 4k. It didn’t sell out before the movie started, so I think many people already seen it a lot of times and are buying it for the first time on Blu-Ray. As for movies showing in the 4k screens, is it used for preshow, or does AMC rely on the same old digital projection that’s in all screens?
FYI, the “Toy Story” double feature will last two weeks. If Cloudy still makes money, especially with the 3-D version, then AMC could still show Cloudy on one screen and “Toy Story 1&2” on a another. After the double feature is over, then AMC could show a standard 2D film like “Where the Wild Things Are” on one screen and “Cloudy 3-D” on another if it still makes money. If it doesn’t, then AMC could show “Where the Wild Things Are” on both screens before next week, when “Nightmare Before Xmas 3-D” makes its Rockaway debut for a few weeks before “A Christmas Carol 3-D” comes out. Judging from the trailer, which I saw in East Hanover, it looks promising and Carrey’s first Disney film. If it does well, then AMC would keep it around Christmas time, when “Avatar” comes out. By that time, AMC will around three 4k projectors (one every two months). I predict that by February 2011, that all 16 screens will be 4k.
This is great news. Since the frequency of 3D releases will increase over time, adding another 4K projector will help reduce the overlap problem. Now 3D releases will only have to compete with each other for audiences rather than for the same screen. “G-Force” got bumped to 2D when “X-Games” arrived, as did “Final Destination” when “Cloudy” arrived when both could have done better had there been two 3D screens. “Cloudy” will need more than a two-week run for those who want to enjoy it in 3D before the “Toy Story” double feature arrives. Hopefully, the system will be installed by then.
