My research stops here, since I have done 34+ big cities and had to pick a cutoff date…if anyone with access to Houston microfilms (closest to me are in State College, PA) and time wants to post further years, I’m sure we all would enjoy and appreciate it. Check other Houston theaters for movie openings from 1960-75 as I am able to post the data.

My research shows no more first-run openings or reissues at the Metropolitan. It goes up through 12/31/75. The theater, like most big downtown movie palaces fell victim to real estate ventures and changing exhibition
patterns. In the 60s, the Metropolitan pretty much changed features weekly, unless a film was a smash hit. It was a home for Jerry Lewis comedies, Elvis musicals, and westerns of all stripes. Almost all major films played first in Houston at the Metropolitan, the Majestic, and Loew’s State. By the mid-60s they had their openings at new theaters built by shopping malls and as the 60s became the early 70s the old downtown theaters had to resort to showing soft-core pornography, horror films, and blaxsploitation pictures before they were razed for new skyscrapers.
Movies that played at the Metropolitan Theater in Houston, TX from 1/1/69 to 12/31/71. Research is from old microfilms of The Houston Post and The Houston Chronicle. The dates are the Wednesday of the opening week.

This is the theater that had the Pittsburgh area premiere of “I Am Curious (Yellow)” in November 1969 since it was over the county line and away from being raided and seized by the authorities.

It goes up through 12/31/75. The theater, like most big downtown movie palaces fell victim to real estate ventures and changing exhibition patterns.

@Rick Aubrey – the dance studio was in the building two doors away from Bethel Cinemas. It has also been a restaurant and rental hall. In between is a KFC.
This is the theater that had the Pittsburgh area premiere of “I Am Curious (Yellow)” in November 1969 since it was over the county line and away from being raided and seized by the authorities.
