My wife and I went on our first date at the Paris Theatre after we had dinner. It was Saturday December 5, 1998 and we saw LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. On December 5, 2008, we plan to go back to the same restaurant and see whatever film is playing at the Paris afterwards.

I’ve been coming to Westhampton Beach every summer since 1977, but I have failed to ever get to a movie at Sag Harbor. SHAME ON ME!!!

The few times I do go to the movies now, I NEVER go during the first week of a new releases' run. I simply cannot handle the crowds of people.

I’ve only seen four (4) films here: TOOTSIE, 2010, ROCKY IV and DEAD POETS SOCIETY.

Certainly, without Willis O'Brien, there never would have been a Stan Winston.

Even though I often speak out against today’s movies that are infected with nothing but CGI and no story, I have to say that Stan Winston will be missed. Movies like THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS and JURASSIC PARK would not exist without him. R.I.P., Stan.

Sad news, people. STAN WINSTON passed away yesterday of cancer. He was only 62 years-old.

Now while I’m always bitching about how Hollywood has degraded itself over the years by producing too many movies that are over-dependent on CGI effects, I cannot deny that many of my favorite sci-fi films like THE THING (1982), THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, JURASSIC PARK and A.I. could not have been possible without the talents of this man.

R.I.P., Stan.

Tomorrow night, I’m gonna spend some rare quality time with myself at my beach house and watch GREASE and JAWS 2 to celebrate!

I saw it twice at the Great Neck Squire Theater during the summer of 1993!

Paul, I remember that one. The movie they were watching was called “Don’t Open That Door”.

Two of my favorite films that feature movie theaters and the moviegoing experience are SUMMER OF 42' in which Hermie and his friends attend a screening of “Now Voyager” and THE MAJESTIC, where the entire town enjoys some of the best B-movies of the ‘50s every Saturday night.

I believe that Friday June 13, 2008 will mark 30 years to the day that GREASE was released (Friday June 16, 1978). JAWS 2 was released on that same day, as well.

Maria, 30 years later, the summer of 1978 is filled with great memories in the Hamptons, Long Island! Check out the commentary I wrote about it a week or so ago.

My family went to see GREASE in the theater six (6) times! Two of those times, we stayed in our seats to watch it a second time. You could do that back then with a problem. Today, it’s one of the few movie musicals I enjoy.

I saw SOMEWHERE IN TIME for the first time only within the last years or so. Honestly, it didn’t do all that much for me.

Movie534, so I suppose having a serious talk with the current theater manager won’t do any good?

When I got home last night, I was so angry, that I told my wife when we go to see the new INDIANA JONES movie, we’re driving to Port Washington, where I have (so far) had more calming experiences.

I hate to have to say this about my own town theater, but it has really gone to the dogs, in my opinion. I went there last night to see IRON MAN; specifically waiting nearly two weeks after it opened and going on a weeknight. In short, the place was an absolute zoo, resembling that of a typical urban multiplex. Children and teenagers everywhere, running around the theater, talking loudly while the movies are in progress, and unable to break away from their pathetic cell phones.

If the management of this theater cannot enforce any guidelines for proper behavior in this theater, then they are going to lose my business and anyone else that I can convice not to patron this place. And if it means the closing of my town theater, then so be it!

By the way, in 1978 alone, there were four (4) “Jaws” rip-off films released theatrically: BARRACUDA, TINTORERA…TIGER SHARK, PIRANHA and of course, JAWS 2.

During the summer of 1978, I remember really wanting to see SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND for no other reason that I was really wild about the Bee Gees at the time. I didn’t know any of Peter Frampton’s music (yet) and I wasn’t even aware that the title was from the Beatles original 1967 album (if you can believe that!). I finally saw it on video in the early ‘90s. What a dud!

Verranth1, my first R-rated movie was SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. I was 10 years-old. It had everything I could want – great music, plenty of profanity and some female nudity. Ah, Heaven!

Movie534, I do remember the Disney “Summer Festivals” you’re talking about and it was during the summer of 1977. I think I can vaguely remember seeing a double-feature of “Mary Poppins” and “Lady and the Tramp” with my father. Even as a kid, I don’t think those two were any particular favorites of mine.

The tribute is also currently playing at the Film Forum at West Houston Street in New York City. I am (tentatively) planning to see a double feature of “City Light” and “Modern Times” there next week. Believe it or not, I’ve NEVER seen a silent film on screen! Shame on me!
